Hey whassup - I'm about to take the plunge into DAW-land and need some opinions on the system I'm planning on putting together. Basically I'd like to do 2 things: 1) Record my own stuff (Live guitar/bass, drum loops, synth sounds) and transfer 4-track stuff I do with my band onto computer so I can add extra audio tracks, mix and convert to mp3 files. 'Nuff said.

Computer: Dell Pentium 3, 128MB 20 GB
Soundcard: Lexicon Core 2 or Midiman Delta 44
Software: n-tracks (for now...)
ART tube pre-amp
My trusty Shure 57 mic
How does this sound - am I missing anything? Which soundcard do people prefer?

Also one more question....how do non-drummers
get good,live-sounding drum beatsvwhen working on a DAW, and how do you arrange these beats into songs....just curious. Thanks

Well... why do you want to transfer your 4-track stuff ? Why not reccord everything directly to your computer ?

Well... the best way to do with the drums i think is not the loop, but a good midi controler (i got some real good drums sounds with a Sound Blaster using some semi-professional Soundbanks playing the drums on a Rolland XP-10 to got the velocity on midi and making it match with metronome on the staff editor).

About your soundcard, you need 4 channels to transfer from a 4 track stuff or if you trust your pan sellection before recording everything transfer it on just 2 channels.

Software i use Cakewalk and love it...

Shure 57 is perfect for many things...

128 of Ram may be few if you work with 24bts/96hz tracks...

i think a small 4 channel mix (Behringer or Mackie) with a balanced cable to your mic and a DI to your bass will make your reccords go brighter with few $$$.

I just don't like to buy already done computers... this may create problems, for example, with your Delta 44....

Cya !!!
