Onyx firewire trouble.

Well, I stumped the tech support at Mackie today.

If you're firewire start to act weird, like when playing back audio through the onyx mixer and the sound drops out for a moment and a high pitch signal ensues for a moment, then you'll probably need to get a new firewire card, assuming you're using the motherboard's firewire originally.

Tech support could't really tell what was going on, and as far as I could tell they hadn't dealt with it before. Thus...I'm posting this incase someone gets this rare bug as well.
 
Do you have other devices hooked up digitally (S/PDIF, etc) to your interface???

Could be a digital clock setting....

The above problem goes away with my 1220 when I disable my laptops Wireless Network adapter.
 
I've found that mobo-mounted USB / firewire ports can act funky for audio devices. My mbox would not work at all, and neither would an m-audio quattro.
 
no they definately know about this. mine did it all the time, still does. haha. I stumped them too, got like 5 emails back an forth of us trying to debug it.

what is wierder is that I got it to stop on my 2nd hardware profile/user profile.

I disabled EVERYTHING I could that I didn't need for audio/recording/mixing. That includes system proccesses, hardware that was going unused (including USB ports, etc.), and a TON of services.

somewhere in there, it fixed that exact problem. so anytime I use the mackie I'd just restart the comp and load it on a diff. hardware profile and sign into my "recording" user profile as well.

I suggest you try the same, and don't bother with a new card. streamlined system for recording is better anyway! ha.
 
Ohhh, ok. Man they acted like they nerver heard of it. The 2 guys I spoke with didn't help at all. I ended up just getting a firewire card. No problems at all now. I guess I could have done what you said shackrock, but it's too late now. I don't want to take it back, I like it :).

did you check the Mackie forums? Yeah, they know about it alright...

Are you plugged into a PCI Firewire card? If so, then something else might be hogging the PCI bus. Disabling other devices may help. Or try to adjust the PCI bus settings too.

Some people on the Mackie boards thought this had something to do with the graphics card, they suggested lower graphics and screen resolutions settings.

Are you on SP2? If so, double check that your Firewire x-fer speed is correct. Check this out:

I get this occasionally with my 1220. When I start loading up plug-ins and taxing the system, this will happen occasionally. Sometimes it happens when the screen refreshes...

Try turning off USB, networking, autoplay...

Troubleshooting this stuff can be tricky. Usually the best solution is to have a dedicated platform for audio work and turn off most of the stuff that you don't need. maybe you have this already...

I belive they recommend a FW card with a TI chipset, no??
