Only recording left channel

I am mixing down some tapes from my old 4 track onto one stereo track in Cubase. However, it will only record anything that is being sent to the left channel on the 4 track. As soon as I pan everything right, the signal decreases in volume and then disappears.
I am sure this will happen whatever I choose to feed into my PC, such as a hi-fi.
Can anyone help?

This could be one of a couple of things:

1. You're using the wrong cable: You need a stereo cable that goes from the main outs of your cassette deck/4-track to the input of your soundcard (presumably a 1/8" stereo jack).

2. You don't have cubase configured properly: In the devices menu. go to device setup and make sure your soundcard is selected. Also in the devices menu, go to VST inputs and make sure both inputs (L & R, or 1 & 2), are active. Then, make sure you are recording to a stereo track from inputs L&R or 1&2.

There could also be a problem with how you're routing the channels from your 4-track, but my money is on one of the above 2 options.

Thanks for the reply. However, it doesn't seem to be restricted to Cubase. Basically, something weird is happening on my PC that hasn't happened before.

For example, I use another piece of software to record vinyl as wave files. Normally, I'd route the amp to the soundcard with a stereo cable, and it records the wav file in stereo, no problem. However, now my PC is not even doing this properly. I hear it coming out of the PC speaker in stereo, but once I play back the recording, it's all in mono.

It seems to be something to do with the PC only recognising things sent to the left channel, and then it records a mono version of it split over both channels. I can't fix it though.

Got an adapter in there somewhere??

Are you sure you've got a stereo splitter adapter or just a plain Y-adapter (there is a BIG difference!!! Been there, done that!)
