Compressors on guitars??? why?? and how should i set if i should have one....

the guitar is a VERY dynamic instrument and compressors are used to tame dynamics, but be sure you dont squash or kill the dynamics....

I ALWAYS compress my acoutic guitar a bit, because it is such a dynamic instrument. But there's absolutely no squashing in my rack! I play myself, so finetuning during performances is not an option. I rather have an under compressed guitar than an overcompressed one, it gives a real 'live' feel to it IMO.
I should compress my electric guitar too, when clean, but the compressor in my ZOOM GFX-8 really sucks, so I usually put just a small drive on the signal. When the sound distorts I know that I play too dynamicly. Problem solved!

Acoustic guitar, clean electric guitar, I compress, of course the amount and how I set it up depends on the tune it's going into. Distorted, crunchy electric guitar I don't compress (hell, it's already a square wave, why squish it any more).
Nylon string, classical guitar I don't usually compress as I want to keep as much of the dynamic range of the instrument as possible, there again, it would depend on the context of the tune it's going into.
