One guitar into multiple amps

I have always wondered how a single guitar can be hooked up into more than one amp at a time. I mostly noticed this at concerts that I have been to, most recently was Tool, I read an interview that Adam Jones uses one particular amp to take care of the lows, and two other amps for the mids and highs. I would like to experiment with combining two or three amps to create a unique sound. Is there some sort of a hub type thing that you plug your guitar into and it feeds out 2 or more lines for amps? Thanks for any insight.

I always thought you'd just put the line outs from your first amp and send them to rhe others... But then the sound is allready coloured by the first one... Am I missing something here?

as far as splitin by frequencies I think that's what the crossover units are for.

also couldn't you use a Y-cable

I've tried running multiple amps a lot. You really need to get amps that compliment each other or you'll just get a lot of mud.
A cross-over will split frequencies, but you'll want the cross-over points to overlap. Unless you're running into a bass amp for the lows or something. I use my Sansamp Acoustic DI which as 2 outs. 1 XLR and 1/4". Works like a charm. There are splitter boxes, but a lot of those will add noise. Y cords work ok, but you can lose a lot of signal depending on cord length. Another option is to use a small mixer and use either sub outs or aux sends.

Whirlwind makes some A-B-AB boxes that don't seem to effect the tone at all...and if it does it is so slight to not negate the benefits of using multiple amps. They use batteries or a 9v power supply. Check out the Selector at www.whirlwindusa.com

I've always gotten away with using -

guitar - effects - Y adapter

one part of the y adapter goes to an amp, the other part goes to another y adatpter which goes one channel to a second amp or the board and the second channel to a tuner.

The Y adapters are basically Y chords w/ out the chord part. Make sure you get good quality because they do degrade the sound if they're cheap crappy ones.

What I meant was that some amps produce better tones for the lows than others. I wasn't really interested in a crossover unit I just want something that will turn my one guitar cable into 2 or more. I have tried the line out feature on my amp, but realized that the signal being sent had already been processed through the first amp. I will check out the Whirlwind AB box, and the Y adapter thing. Thanks.
