On The Spot Writing

Anybody ever tried this? Earlier today, I was just messing around in my basement studio. I got bored and just made a random drum loop on my comp. Then, liking it, I hooked up to record bass and I started to play a bass part to it on tthe spot withut even thinking what I wanted to play before I started recording. Then I did the same with guitar, and then recorded vocals freestyle. It was really cool. I've found this strategy helps me write songs that don't sound exactly like every other song I've written.

im the same way with guitar i cant play the same way twice...

you know i read somewhere that pink floyd used to draw abstract pictures then write songs that mimic the dynamics of that picture...

That's how I write. A good drum loop, and then grab guitar, or bass, and noodle.

it's not the only way to write, but it definately opens the doors up a little more.

Being in the moment is the best bit! because you don't know where your jam sesh will take you.

I've started so many songs as slow and mellow and they end up being completely different with rock tones, so keep at it - stay in the moment

Great way to start something but then you have the problem of trying to figure out how to do it again.
Someone posted on this site several months ago asking people to try and decode what he had done.
This would have the same result if you didn't have a good ear to be able to pull the detail out of your creation.

So thumbs up for creativity but thumbs down for reproducing it.

Record it or hum it into a dictaphone or leave the idea on your answering machine or mobile phone.

I've written a few songs in that way (often instrumental pieces) - however, since I write most of my songs around lyrics the vast majority of my songs are written at a piano or with an acoustic guitar in hand and I do not actually start to track until I have a fairly good idea about the song structure, song arrangment, etc.
