You didn't mention that you're using a pre amp of any kind.

It depends on your definition of "top quality". I regularly use a $2000 mic, a $2000 pre amp, and a $2000 compressor....but I don't necessarily think it sounds "top quality". Of course, I'm in competition with major bands in major studios.

It also depends on what style of music you are making. And I am guessing that you are talking about vocal recording.

You can get a start with a SM58, go buy a pre amp to use with it. But it's not giong to sound like anything you would hear on the radio. Also, you shouldn't be normalizing anything. If the levels are two low, you need to record hotter....probably the lack of preamp here. Same goes for hiss reduction. There should be no hiss to begin with. You need to take care of all this before you start thinking about mixing.

As far as the mixing....EQ varies from person to person and song to song..there's really no wrong or right, it just has to sound good. Same with compression, really. Depends on the music and the source being recorded.

Software can not make something bad sound "excellent". Around here that's known as "Trying to polish a turd"
