I'm now recording with Ntracks via SB Audigy Platinum card and with dynamic mics. Just bought a LD condenser and so I need pres and phantom power, etc.... I was looking at mixers with pres and fx, also looking at stand along pres and compressors.

All I want to record is vocals and one acoustic guitar - nothing fancy.

Its been suggested that I consider the Omni Studion and M Box.... a little more $ than I had in mind, but it looks like they give me better soundcard, mic pres, recording (or do I still have to use Ntracks) and maybe fx? Is this a good way to go? What are the differences between the two? (Mbox doesn't seem to have a soundcard.. is it in the main box instead of a PCI?)

Thanks

the mbox is USB so you don't need a sound card.

i would go with the mbox. you get ProTools LE with it, and that is one powerfull program. just make sure your computer can handle it. and you'll get plug in FX, compressors, EQ's, ect. go check out digidesign's web site for compatability.

you can do alot with pro tools. in my mind, the $450 or so is well worth it just for the program

Thanks..... I think I get it... with the USB, there is no need for a sound card in the PC - I assume you need to keep a card though (rather than dump my SB) to power PC speakers, etc?

Mbox looks a bit more comprehensive, ie. all in one box and (maybe) better software package than the omni studio? Are there other brands I should consider? Now.. I also found the Omni Studio in a USB.... must have just come out, for $495..... I like the idea of USB and not adding another card, but...

Any other, cheaper, cleaner ways to do what I'm after here?

If you're looking for a usb interface, check out the Tascam US122. It's got inbuilt mic pres and comes with Cubase.

I was considering it myself, but was convinced by more knowledgeable people here to stick with a decent pci card and external mixer/mic pre. There's quite a good discussion of the pros & cons of usb in the thread titled USB Problems

I"ll check out the thread... thanks. I was looking at the Tascam, as well..... actually, I'm wondering what the advantage is of the bigger boxes like mbox and omni studio, compared to the little ones like that Tascam and lots of other interface boxes.... I assume the bigger ones have more ins/outs..... but feature wise, whats the diff?

I'll read up on the USB thing... would be easier certainly, but I could see that a PCI card might be a more solid set up

MBOX and MIDI

On a Windows XP machine, any suggestions on what has to be added to get MIDI and have it work with MBox and ProTools?

Thanks,
Steve

Used Omni-studios have been selling for around 250.00-300 on Ebay.
Find a trusted seller and check it out.

The soundcard version omni studio does not have midi jack's. Not sure about the usb version. Check out the manual's on www.m-audio.com to see what they mean by midi. They're talking about running analog outputs from a card that runs midi to an analog input on the omni break out box. I have the omni studio and like it except for that misleading quote on their advertising.
