Old windows drivers conflicting with darla 24 drivers?

Hello Folks,
I just received a darla 24 card. After installing the drivers for it, a window popped up stating there is an error, conflicting with a file Cwd3dsnd.exe (which is CrystalWave Windows Audio Drivers). The darla is working properly and not conflicting with others when I check it out in device manager.
Darla and IRQ Holder for PCI Steering are on IRQ 11. Nothing else. I run on Windows 98, celeron 400, 64 Meg ram, 4.3 G hard drive.
The computer says that Cwd3dsnd caused a general protection fault in module ECHOGALS.DRV (which I suppose is part of the darla 24 drivers I installed.
Can I delete the dwd3dsnd.exe window audio drivers, without doing something very wrong? I can record one track on both ntracks and cool edit pro, but the computer sometimes freezes, I can't shutdown the computer with the on/off button even, so I need to unplug it.
I did email Echo, but thought I would ask if anyone might know what is happening on this really good site.
Thanks

I just mentioned this to someone. When *replacing* any hardware, always fully remove the drivers from the old hardware first. It's hard to say how bad your troubles are. Go into Control Panel/Multimedia/Devices and make sure there are no references to your old soundcard in there. If there are, get rid of them and your problems will probably go away.

If you are certain that the cw3dsnd.exe file (or whatever) is from your previous soundcard, delete it. In fact, delete ALL files that are proprietary to your old soundcard. If things get funky after doing this then simply reinstall your new soundcard...might want to do that anyway.

Note that you're still going to have references to this cw3dsnd.exe file somewhere....either in your registry or in win.ini or system.ini. That's the trouble with simply deleting files. While you might not have any trouble, I'd still recommend getting rid of all references to the old drivers as well as simply deleting them.

Slackmaster 2K,
Thanks for that good advice. It did fix the problem with old soundcard drivers conflicting the new. However, my little emachine is just too slow. I record a track, maybe two and then it all stops. I can really hear the computer working as I add another track. It says, "What the hell are you doing to me!!!"
I think I will now ask someone to build me one for recording only this time.
Any ideas on Processor, hard drive, motherboard and memory for $1000-1500 price range?
Thanks again to you Slackmaster2K, and everyone else at this site. I'm learning, oh am I learning.

Well, with that budget you can build yourself one hell of a machine!

You might even consider building your own. If you got a windows install or two under your belt and have comfortably added/removed hardware from your computer, then you're set! It's pretty fun, really!

Regardless. Minimum PIII-450, they're still cheap and it doesn't seem to be worthwhile to spend extra money on the 500 or higher yet (note my pricelist is old). Go with a minimum of 128MB RAM. If you can hold off, prices WILL come back down. Right now it's ridiculous. Get a large 10GB+ 7200 RPM hard drive. Quantum makes a nice 13.2GB 7200 ATA/66 drive for around $160. If you want to go all out, get a smaller hard drive to go with it...use the smaller hard drive for windows (make sure it's fast as well though) and the big one for waves. Get a motherboard with an ATA/66 controller built in. If you don't like games then go easy on the video card. Get a 17" monitor...NEC Multisync are nice and flat and around $250.

Anyway, it's hard to say anything too specific these days. Note that we're on the brink of some new technology that should be cheap....that is, Intel's next chipset that will support 133Mhz bus speeds and supposedly supports ATA/66 drives such that they can be utilized to their full potential.

Research. Do not rush. Take your time and with a budget of over $1000 plus a nice soundcard you'll do just fine.
