in an attempt to apply the things i've learned about mixing i remixed a song i recorded maybe a year and half ago on a 8 track portastudio. i transfered the tracks to what i'm using now and remixed it.

here are the lyrics (hopefully more people will put down their lyrics. i like reading lyrics, sometimes i can't decipher what people are saying.)

Melinda

i was on a ferry,
a hair past midnight,
the fog made air dense,
and i felt slightly heavy,
she eyed me coyly
i laughed and followed
her scent had billowed
and i said "what's your story?"
she said "my names Melinda.
Lets dance like children"
and for a moment
everything was distant
she pressed against me
her body moving
she kissed me slowly
then left me "where you going?"
where you going?

Saw a boat in the distance
her scent had left me clues in the air
i swam and followed
"Please just don't forget me"
"Please just don't forget me!"
in the still of the water
my heart sank heavy
and now i live in a lake the fish are friends

Oh Melinda
I will miss you
Miss the power that somehow pulled me towards you
you know my heartbeats
Only for you
and for all this time with you on my mind with fishes as my friends i'll wait for you

She haunts me nightly
"you fish don't know what loving is"
they say "get out of the water!"
they say "this ain't no way to live"
"no she won't forget me!"
i kept a swimming
and when i got tired
i finally saw her

Oh Melinda
How i've missed you
Missed the power that somehow pulled me towards you
you know my heat beats
only for you
and for all this time with you on my mind with fishes as my friends i've waited for you

She said "i finally found you"
yeah i was found
"i finally found you"
yeah i was found.

i don't know how i posted two threads of the same thing? I'm trying to delete the other one how do i do it?

I like the song - really energetic pop/rock. The mix is definitely low-fi. The vocals sound good, but somehow the rhythm guitar lacks something. I think I would play with the rhythm guitar EQ a bit - maybe find a frequency that adds "crispness" to the part, or possibly cut a bit of the reverb. Thanks!

g'day

I like the lofi sound that you have going on but the vocals are definitely too muffled, can't make out at all what is being sung about without looking at the lyrics.

Perhaps try cutting some of the low mids and bossting the overall volume.

The overall mix also seems a bit narrow...everything seems to occupy the same space. Be nice to space it out a little...

In fact I was bored so I tried running it through a nice mastering plug that I have. Hope you like the result:

cheers,
ben

Were you going for lo-fi? ... would be the question.

How much control do you have over the tracks? ... meaning ... What can you address separately?

Are the drums all in stereo? Are the guitars, bass etc ... sharing tracks or are you able to isolate them?

Kev-

because i only had 8 tracks to work with the drums had to be bounced to a track except the ride cymbal during the chorus which was recorded separately and panned a little to the right. the bass, guitars and vocals all have a track to work with. i think your right about the rhythm guitar jmasek.

as far the lo fi sound questions, i did it like this cuz i thought it sounded too bright with the cymbals and the bright clean guitars so i took off some of the hi frequencies. Maybe i should add some hi frequency to the vocals?

bendbones it sounds alot smoother! thanks! what kind of equipment did you use?

alright i remixed it. i increased the mids on all the guitars (panned the rhythm guitar further left), i increased the mids and hi on the vocals and increased the stereo eq mids and hi. i also used compression more effectively i think. let me know if the difference is noticable. the song's under the same link as in the first post but under the name Melinda 2.

The new mix is sounding nicer...vocals have better clarity now. I'm still not sure about the drums however, they sound very narrowly mixed, but that is fine if you are going for that type of sound (edit: sorry, I see what you've done - just read your earlier reply :-) ). They remind me of some early u2 productions. Bass sits a lot nicer now too.

With regards to earlier, I simply put the track through Izotope Ozone plugin and used one of the presets. Can't remember the exact one, but I often find it a quick fix (not that quick fixes are ever to be recommended) to adding clarity to an already existing mix.

cheers,
ben.

Change it to Miranda & it can be about the mermaid.
Sounds like the Dexy's singer on a pop song - cool remix.
Nice clarity on the rhythm git.
