No I'm not talking about your new Neumann U87 or Roland VS series DAW....
...I'm talking about your EARS and EYES!!!
OK I know what you are going to say....
....yeah when I go to a concert and sit by the PA I wear ear plugs....good start! But what about when you perform ORDINARY around-the-house tasks?? Do you wear plugs when you mow the lawn? Use that Craftsman weedwacker?? Your circular saw??
If you don't - try this experiment...go to a hardware store and buy a pair of cheap foam plugs. Put them in and begin mowing. After about 15 minutes remove them. Notice how LOUD that mower really is??
What about your eyes? Do you wear safety glasses when using a drill?? Ever get a sliver of metal in your eye? I did when I was younger and I can tell ya - it ain't fun...
Always take a break from mixing every 15 to 30 minutes or so - and mix with monitors set at a reasonable level (I've heard 80-85dB is a good level).
So what's my point in all this?? For anyone who aspires to be a pro engineer - or like me...pursue it at home for the love of music...
...remember... You can't do this type of "work" without a good set of ears and eyes.....protect your assets!!

ps...I wrote this because I saw my neighbor using a chain saw with no gloves - no glasses and no plugs...
...so I let him borrow my stuff!! I didn't want to picture myself half deaf / half blind and losing the ability to do what I love so dearly.......
