Hey folks.

I used to do radio commercials about ... 20 years ago. 20?!? OMG!!!! Wow.

Anyways, I worked in the station and did lots of recordings and such, and I now find myself involved with recording local musicians to get them onto a community radio station. (... and THAT'S the short explaination!)

Anyhoo... I have some questions about converting my garage into a recording studio. But first, I have noticed that you gotta list yer gear first, so here goes:

2 - AKG D880M mics
TAPCO Mix 260FX connected to
TAPCO Link.USB connected to
PC running Adobe Audition. (sometimes I use the Tracktion that Mackie puts in with the TAPCO Link.USB, but I find that Audition has easier bells and whistles)

This stuff is inside my 1 car unattached garage, built about 1920.

Questions:

I need some studio monitors. I have read SO many reviews and its gets confusing, but... Powered? Passive? Whatever it is, the wife has strangled my spending limit after the whole TAPCO spending spree... "but they were on SALE!!!!"

1.) Good Quality, Inexpensive Studio Monitors... what are YOU using?

I have used cheap cheap cheap ceiling tile all OVER the garage and got some remnant carpet for the cement floor. I have recorded myself whacking 2 x 4s together and it sounded good, but I can also pick up noise from the street, but not while actively recording. (I mean to say, in the quiet times, if a loud boom-car goes by or my neighbors Harley, I pick it up)

2.) Should I just take the overhead door out? Or just use the caulking foam and seal it?

The garage was built back in the 20s and someone back in the 70s redid the power, but I find that the job was done by... well, lets just say that the job was done by a 'Good Ol Boy'.

3.) Rewire?

I know that if this takes off, like it seems to be snowballing towards, I am going to want to record seperate tracks and not just mix it all at the 260FX and then thru the Link.USB to the PC. I have looked at my options, soundcard for the PC... something like the Yamaha AW4416 (just saw one go on ebay for $350!!) or any number of other options. Back in the day, we used TEAC reel to reels... boy, I feel old just saying that...

4.) What direction to take? (Audition wasnt cheap and what I have done so far sounds pretty dam.. uh, dang good.)

Sorry about the length, but when I get on a roll, I just jabber.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I just picked up some Wharfedale Diamond Pro 8.2 Actives for $250... love em...
Prior, I was using my KRK Rokit 5's... I think I paid about $225 for them a year or so ago, but I'm seeing where folks are picking them up now for around $200 and under

Great little monitors for the price...

:)

I second the Wharfedales....$225??? Were they used? I bought mine new for $349 (for a pair) which is a lot of bang for the buck at that. I love 'em!

Do a quick search in the Mixing & Mastering forum...there've been recent threads about inexpensive monitors.

Re: The overhead door.

The first desicion is will the garage be a selling feature for the property in the future - if so, you likely need to keep the overhead. Remove the overhead and build a wall - and it ain't a garage no more!!!

However, it the resale value of the property is not an issue - If I was going to put a studio in my garage, I would not want an overhead door that would allow someone to break in, open the overhead and literally back in and load out.

Unless you can really secure that door, it is a theft waiting to happen. Regarding sound treatment, I would think taking the door out and putting in a wall that you can build with air space or whatever sound treatment method would lend itself to better room sound and noise control - but there is a cost to that.

Good luck in your endeavor!!
