I was going through my old box of equipment and found an AKG microphone that I am unfamiliar with: AKG D 1000 E. It is a slender silver mic, 200 ohms, made in Austria, and a three way switch at the bottom with the settings "B", "M", "S". Anybody have an idea what this switch is for and what the B, M, and S is used for? I looked on the AKG Web site and they do not have a "museum" of sorts for information on older mics. :)

It is a bass rolloff switch. I forget which letter corresponds to what but it is pretty obvious if you listen. The mic is a bit thin even with the bass not cut but it's good on a guitar cab sometimes. It doesn't seem to have the big 5k peak like a 57, it has a lot less bottom and maybe a touch more top.

I just bought an AKG D 1000 M and stumbled across this thread also looking for information on the mic. This thread is quite old but I was able to get more info from AKG’s website in their “Library” / “Archive” (they may have added since 2002). The following link has a zip file with what appears to be scans of an old brochure or manual for the mic.

“B” = Bass
“M” = Medium
“S” = Sharp

I also noticed the mic I have looks slightly different than the other D 1000’s I’ve seen. I’ve primarily seen D 1000 E’s and the info states there is a D 1000 C and the difference is the connectors. I can’t seem to find anything on the “M” version and the visual difference I can see is just below the cartridge housing where the AKG label is; it doesn’t get skinnier staying wide like the base/shaft. Any ideas?

Not sure about the variations, but I have one of these and absolutely love it for Marshall guitar cabs!

I've also used it for live vocals quite a bit.
