I thought it worth revisiting and tweaking the long ago previously posted cover that Apl and I did of Neil Young's tune.

I played guitars, mandolin, and bass.

Apl provided the vocal.

Really enjoyed the mix of guitar, mandolin and bass. Sounds very, very good. The playing and sound levels are spot on. The vocals at times sound somewhat like Neil Young. The higher register parts are too out of tune (even for a Neil Young cover). I'd re-do those parts. I wouldn't change a thing on the instrumental parts.

Instrumentals: 9.2

Sexy instrumentals. No critiques there.

In fact, no critiques on any technical aspects.

Style: 2

Vocals:

In tune!

I think the way the vox was performed was lame. There were points where I asked myself if it were Kermit singing the song.

But there were parts of the vocals which shined. Those of which Neil would be proud.

As far as sound quality goes, this sounds great! What mic did you use for vox?

I was actually going to ask what mics, technique you used for the guitar part. Whatever it was, it bears repeating.

Very nice open and airy mix!

I could do without the falsetto portions of the vox, but you really can't bring in a female to sing this one can you... ? :D

Good job you guys!

Digging the mandolin and guitar. Cannot hear the bass very well though. Don't know if it's possible to do anything something like raise it at around 400 hz or have one part where it comes forward for a moment. Just an idea. :) All in all a very clear sound. :) Voice really well recorded also. Feel like listening to it again. :)

Best regards,
PK

Beautiful, 60's!
Just love those acoustics, tell us how you recorded them. And the mandolin blends in so well. I love the way APL sang this, I think it's very close to Neil Young. Well done to both of ya!

Joe :):):):)

i love the original of this song and this version is pretty good. i think your trying too hard to sound like neil. there are parts where i think your natural voice comes out and that sounds pretty good. maybe try to sing it more naturally.

Yep..those acoustics sound good!

The vocals are pretty close too.

I never have cared a lot for the sound of Neil Young's voice, but it is unique and I always find myself singing along with it anyway.

Good job guys!!

Hey, momma sang Bass, remember?!:D

Man, the acoustic just brings it home. Captured so nicely.

Ya know, when you do a cover, everybody is going to compare it to the original and most of the time it's going to come up short. So, when you know you're starting with 2 strikes against you and any single slip up is going to take you out of the game, you usually try to bring something new and exciting to the song to survive scrutiny. To cover a song right down to the matching the singer's tonality takes a lot of guts but I gotta say, you pulled it off. I think with a little bit of practice, APL might be able to hit the high notes without falsetto. Other than that, it sounds great.

And that acoustic sounds so good.

Cool.

Exactly...that's why I'm not so fond of doing covers. It's easier doing your own..that way you can just say you intended it to sound that way...:D

Simple setup if I remember correctly. A Marshall MXL V67 in front of the soundhole through a DMP-3 pre. Same thing for the mandolin.

:D

Actually, I thought Apl did a really good job of singing it even with the falsetto. I'd imagine that even Neil Young has a hard time hitting those high notes these days.;)

Wow 60'sgay, I think this the best mix I've heard from you. Guitars and shit sound great. Good job man! :)

That's Apl on vocals? I like Apl a lot, but damn he sounds freakin terrible.

Love the mandollins. I agree with more bass, seems I just hear bass from guitar and no actual bass. Maybe my speakers. but very cool.
