I've got an old Mac G3 Blue & White 400MHz, running OS 10.3.7, that I was thinking about making a dedicated machine for recording (vocals only).

I was planning to pick up an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 (or Delta 44), but in looking over the specs on M-Audio's site, it seems that none of their products will work with anything running under 500MHz. :(

Is anyone successfully recording on a similar system? What is the best work-around? I've heard pretty mixed reviews about the sound quality of the MobilePre USB (which does seem compatible), but I'd prefer to go with a seperate preamp and sound card interface if possible. Whatever will give me the cleanest and best quality sound (without breaking the bank).

Any thoughts....anybody?

Speed things up, and get a Firewire Solo from M-Audio ($199).

Looks interesting, but it seems to cost as much as I had budgeted for the preamp and PCI card combined, and I'd still need an interface.
Also, most of the M-Audio stuff appears not to work with accelerators.
I saw an older, discontinued M-Audio sound card while Googling around (sorry I don't remember the model - I was starting to get glassy-eyed by that point), which seems to predate the Audiophile 2496, probably about 4 or 5 years old. Specs were slim on whatever site I saw it.
It looks like the perfect PCI card for this machine and my humble needs, but I'm wondering whether it had the type of sound quality that makes the 2496 so frequently recommended. Any old-timers who've worked with older M-Audio interfaces, or have a source for them, who'd care to share their experience with this fiscally challenged but sincere newbie? :o
