I started doing some midi many years ago with a PC, and Yamaha DX7 and MasterTrax Pro midi sequencer. I didn't like the midi sounds from the soundblaster sound card so I got a Korg 05RW sound module and was happy for a while.
I have recently bought a Yamaha P-80 weighted keyboard and have a P4 PC which came with a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card (again- poor midi sounds)
My situation now is that MasterTrax Pro is nearly extinct and my version does not run well in XP so I'm looking for a new sequencing software and sound card. Most of the posts I have read on software and soundcard suggestions seem to be audio based- mic, drums, guitars, etc. and, while I like the potential to add audio, my emphasis will be on keyboard input for most instruments.
In terms of sequencing, I like working in the piano roll editor and editing midi data, although I am intrigued by the possibilities of loops.
In terms of sounds, I like to have alot of good sounds at my disposal rather than spending alot of time playing with creating new sounds. I hear alot about software synths which interest me, however, I don't know much about them or what their relationship to the sequencing software is.
So, in conclusion, I would like to use my P-80 as the midi-controller and sound module for keyboard sounds, use the korg 05R/W sound module (and possibly use the DX7 as a sound module), with a sequencing software that has audio capability but is midi oriented. I also would like to get a sound card that sounds great, however, I don't need alot of instrument inputs.
I would welcome any recommendations.- Cheers
