I wish I could play fiddle, 'cause this needs one ;)

Soppin' The Gravy

It is a work in progress, but there is one problem I feel like is preventing me from progressing with this mix any further. There are parts of the mando that are a little out of the pocket groove wise and too loud. I know how to fix the groove problem with auto punching and cutting/pasting, but I need some help evening out the parts where I brushed the strings too hard. This is preventing me from setting the level of the mandolin properly. Should I use compression, or edit the loudness of the wave file? If compression would do it, what settings should I try? I don't want to color the tone of the instrument any more than necessary to get the job done. Am I going to have to bite the bullet/go back in a replay the mandolin stuff?

Thanks!

I can hear where you're falling out of the pocket. You could try to do edits but I'd bet money you won't like it. I'd bite the bullet and cut it again. I mean, that's the whole point, ain't it? By the way, the tune kicks my ass.:D

I think they make the frets so short so you can reach the notes faster. I've tried to play fiddle tunes on guitar and it's just painful. lol
Good job....

Don't compress it I think the openness is really nice for this style and works well, the loudness is just a mix issue and putting in a little bit of automation if you can manage it will help an awful lot.

I can hear where you mean but it doesn't really bother me to be honest. I agree with Mike, editing probably won't be a real fix unless you get a really experienced hand to do it for you.

Thanks. I'm inclined to that way of thinking for sure.

I'm going to try before going on to recut, but you may be right. For some reason, I think I can cut and paste by musical phrase and be okay. I'm recording and mixing on an Akai DPS24, and that thing has a way of smoothing edits for you. If I can just get one really pleasing mandolin solo in the middle, I might get a fiddle player to come in and do the first and last ride.

Thanks. It would probably bother me much less if it was somebody else's picking, but you know what they say about your own worst critic, right?

Thank you guys very much for the listen and feedback.

Yeah, Man!!! Love it. Wish I could roll it off like you do.

I think you can get the slop in line with editing....like you said. Just an occasional bad trouble. Don't worry about sanitizing it too much, though. Leave some of the less blatant time flux for honesty's benefit...it's endearing to ears tired of mechanical music.

Automation for the levels of the mando: yep. Do you have it on your platform? Do you know how to use it?

There's an easy way to do the same thing:

Snip the mando track before and after any passages you want to loudify or quiet down...at a quiet null spot available. Highlight the snipped section, and apply the '3db louder' or '3 db quieter' tool...that's on just about every platform. If you don't have that available, group the snipped parts that have roughly the same level corrections needed, onto a couple separate tracks ['bounce to track' tool]. Adjust the levels for each of the two, three or more mando tracks. Badda bing.

That was a nice piece of work, and a pleasant break from pop/rock/metal/punk/alt

dude...you dont want this to sound perfect...id leave it...i wouldnt wanna hear some good pickin all polished...i think its polished enough as it is....i like this raw....awesome playing!

'smokes that was good !! I wish I could play like that, but I'm just a guitar player, not a real musician ;). What a fun listen. There were just a few minor timing issues here, but no big deal for me.
Rock out with your banjo out!

:D;)

A bit of timing tension . . . but not too drastic . . . fix or leave it, it's fine by me. Great tune, great playing, and importantly, you've captured the integrity of those instruments really well.

As recommended - automate the levels.
I had a similar proble, recently with a bass track & it was a case of going in & raising or lowering the volume at the problem points. It's a little laborious but beats compression as it's kinder to the good sections.
