Trailing Behind Again
I was going through some old files and found one of the first songs I recorded when I first got serious about home recording. All I had was a Tascam MF-P01, (a 4-track cassette recorder) and the AT Pro 100 mic I have now. I recorded everything on the Tascam, bounced to a boom box, and recorded some more. I captured it using Roxio, and "mixed" it there (just added some of the cheezey effects it comes with)...

Anyway, have a listen and tell me what you think. I can't do too much to the mix (other than delete it), so what I am really after is opinions on whether or not I did the song justice:

Always On My Mind

I suppose its not bad for a 4track recording Rokket.
The singing however...... :o :D

I want to hear you actually go for the notes and keep them, no wobbles, no slides, take all that performancey stuff out. I found doing that made me realise how much I was ignoring the actual pitch of the note I was heading toward - and how to get it instead. Once you are nailing the notes, step-time, robot-like, you can think about the extras.

I liked some of the guitars, and yes, it's pretty good for a 4-track cassette! :)

Vocals need a lot of work...but I was surprised at the quality of a 4-track also...Got any oldie originals?....... :D

No, none that I would post anyway. Most of the stuff I was doing before were all instrumental things anyway. Most of them were boring because I am not a lead guitarist...

I am going for singing lessons after the retirement. I think that will help me.

Of course, that's if there is anything salvagable with my voice...

Nice tune Rokket. Sounds very good for an old 4 track. My old stuff had so much noise in it, and I could never clean it up very well.

Vocals aren't too bad. Need work, but compared to me, you can sing. I kinda make noise. I've been doing some lessons, but it's much harder than guitar, so takes way more time to see any gains. It's frustrating, but you have to stick with it.

Anyway, good performance here. If you want to hear something weird, check out my recent post in the clinic, It's called Southern Fried.....

Post some of your instrumental stuff, and see what you can do with it now.

Thanks for the listen. I do have a couple little snipets I've been toying with. Mostly for song ideas. I'll PM you the link if you want to hear it.

I'm telling you, Eddie, just play the tune on a keyboard and try to sing to it, note for note. Take all the energy and emotion out, treat it as a technical exercise. It doesn't matter how you get the notes, just get them. Then, once you can nail discrete notes with ease, start bringing some of the 'looseness' back in.

That should help you til you get diaphragm lessons :)

Send me the link, I'll listen. I love home recorded stuff, no matter what genre.

Sounds like some solid advice. I'm going to "steal" this for myself. Thanks, dude.

I like the vocal's genuine feel and sonority. The 12 string gtr's a good backing for it. What comes to mind to me is that if I had a big fight with my wife, then recorded this exact track, vox intonation and all, when she heard it it would have fixed everything.

The practice method that noisedude suggested is one I heard singers doing every day during my conservatory years. Works really well.

Thanks all! I think I have enough to think about now!
Nik, I am going to give that a shot. I found some free lessons (remembering you get what you pay for) on the 'net, so I will look those over too.

Tim,
Thanks, that was the feel I was going for.

Tune comes down in a couple days.

Hmmmm 112 views.

Are people still listening to this or just reading the thread? I want to take it down, but not if someone is honestly interested in it...

I'm still getting hits off this thread, FWIW,...

& my mp3 posts are up 24/7/365! (All covers!)

Thanx!!

;)
