Old computer broke - P4 or Athlon for the new one?

I have used AMD before...and I like them a lot (Athlon). So, my first choice for the core of my new system was going to be an Athlon XP 1600+, with like the Gigabyte Motherboard (or something using the 760-761, whatever chipset). I didn't want to go with VIA becuase I am using an Aardvark Q10 with the computer, and the say that their stuff doesn't work that well with VIA (well, it actually just says VIA and pro audio in general don't mix too well, I don't know if this is true with the latest chipsets).

At any rate, the XP 1600+ runs around 130 bucks or so right now...which is the same as the P4 1.4 ghz. And as I understand it you can now get a P4 motherboard that uses DDR ram?

At this point I guess I am still leaning AMD, unless someone thinks going with the P4 would be the more stable option. In terms of "speed", it doesn't really matter to me if one gets 5 points higher on such and such benchmark...I was using a P3 550 before that worked just fine. Mainly I want something that will work perfectly with my Aardvark card, and not crash. Any help would be appreciated.

(please give me motherboard advice..along with processor - thanks! :) )

Athlon. Its audio performance is stellar. In fact, you should avoid any P4 system that doesn't use Rambus RAM; they were thrown out there to get Intel some sales, but the performance hit the platform takes with non-Rambus RAM is pretty significant. For more technical information that I can't possible explain, check out Toms' Hardware Guide at www.tomshardware.com.

Definatly athlon xp but wait for about 1-2 months because they're about to reelase a new verion thats smaller faster running and will be cheaper but if your buying now you probably can't get a bigger bargain than the athlon xp 1800/1900+and if u want the extra performance there's the new 2000+ but stay away from intel they can't handle big multitasking stuff (like audio) neraly as well as an athlon xp will.

I've got my Aardvark DP 24/96 playing nicely with an ECS K7S5A MOBO and an AMD XP 1700+. This MOBO is a SIS 735 chipset. Takes either SDRAM OR DDR. Had some problems installing with Win2K, couldn't shake a high-pitched whine. Installed WinME, and haven't turned back...
