old 488, trying to record 4 tracks at once

hi folks,

i own the original (old) 488 and i do not have a users manual for it.

i've read that my machine has the ability to record up to 4 tracks at once, yet i cannot do this, i assume because only the inputs for 1 & 2 have trim on this machine.

would i need to use external pre-amps for 3 & 4? or would that not work either?

i'd just like to have 4 mic's going in and get them each on their own separate track (1 through 4), but this has not worked (mic's in 1 & 2 slightly bleed onto 3 & 4)

is it simply not possible to do 4 tracks at once on the old 488 without external pre-amps or without an external mixer?

i'd love to keep it simple, but....

(actually, i'd love to record 8 tracks at once with this machine, but, i'll settle for 4 if it can be done without a mixer or more preamps :)

thanks

sb

If you want to record 4 mic'd sources at the same time, you'll need a couple of additional preamps, or...

...get yourself a nice affordable mixer like the Mackie 1202. It has decent mic pre's built-in. Otherwise, you're stuck in the scenario you've just outlined.

I've got the 488mkII. You CAN record 4 mi'd sources at once because it has pres on channels 1-4. I still use an external preamp (Event EMP-1) because (1) I only need to record one thing at a time, and (2) it's way better than using the built-in pre's, quality-wise.
