Ok whats the deal with tracks 5/6 on the 424MKIII

I'm really not sure how the heck you use these "tracks". I know you can record stuff live and use them to put multiple sources to tracks 1234 but can you use them as standalone mono tracks? What about 7/8? I've read the manual and I don't really understand how to use these "tracks" even still. Can someone help me out? Or give me some good tips on how to use them? Thanks!

You mean Channels 5 and 6, right? The 424 is a four track recorder.

ok well I'm getting the tracking process with these now but does that mean I have to mix say a drumkit before actually recording, with the faders?

Has anyone miced a drum kit using all 6 channels down to 2 tracks?

Yo! 5&6 are extra inputs...(not tracks) They are for inputs only. They can be used to add extra sources during mixdown OR live recording. They can get signals FROM the inputs of 1/3 or 2/4 or thier own inputs (1/4 phone jacks) Thay are NOT stand alone mono "tracks".

I HAVE used all 6 inputs to mix drums onto 2 tracks in stereo and it works great...but you have to be very carefull with your levels or else! Make sure you set the levels on 5 & 6 BEFORE you add the levels from 1 thru 4! Don't go past 0db or say +3db on your meters. I usually run the whole mess over to my 8 track reel to reel in stereo after I get a good mix...but you can direct it all to 2 tracks of your 424 if you want.....

7/8 are aux inputs for FX returns and are stereo...going direct to the master fader. 7/8 can be used to add extra inputs to the final mix also....but aren't as loud and haven't worked as well for me doing that. I use 5/6 for my drum machine mostly. Hope this helps! Rock on.....
