Taking the slow road
MXL 960 is a tube condenser mic LDC cardioid. I was sooo close to getting a v77, then fip, they're gone. Is a low cost tube mic worth it at all or will it not really provide the true tube mic experience? Or is it too new to know yet?

And I think the 690 is a redesign of the v69m. I'm tempted, but I already have the latter mic.

last week's posting...

It's true that the MXL V77s and the Nady 1100 shared the same design, BUT the Nady are not manufactured anymore by the same company...797 in China (who makes Sound Projects mics as well as some ADKs, etc... ) made the V77s for MXL, as well as the original version of the Nady TCM1100 (until MXL left to control their own manufacturing, at which time the V77s was discontinued once inventory was depleted) ...for the past couple of years Nady has contracted manufacturing with another company in S.China (where the labor is even cheaper) and although it shares the same basic design, the QC is not as good as the 797 product...the ADK 51TC also shares a similar design but is twice the price! (STILL produced by 797)...anyway, I have all 3 MXL tube mics and I most prefer the natural sound of the V77s to the more colored sounds of the V69M and the 960 (smoother than the V69M)...all 3 have their strong points, and each is a terrific value if you're looking for a budget tube mic...the 960 is the best deal at $199...I swapped the tube out for a vintage Mullard 4024 (military quality ECC81/12at7) which can be had for $14. on ebay...I have to say the mic sounds real nice!...I have friends who bought the Nady only to find that the diaphrams had wrinkles (bad QC)...but supposedly that problem has been corrected...you can't go wrong with any of the MXL tube mics for the money, but I would recommend the 960 for starters...as the thread below will explain, many think it's just a repackaged V69M for MF to run with...

Where's that price? Anyway, Kidvybes, thanks for that post, very informative.

I really wanted a v77, I was ready to buy and that's the day I couldn't get one new.

I love the v67 and I think Harvey was saying that v77 was like it and even more, so I was psyched....

I guess I'll try the 960 and soon. I'll call GC just to see if they have it and if it's close to the same deal.

Holy S, why did I bother?! Dealing with GC can be like talking to an infant.

What do you consider the true tube experience?

I don't know that's why I asked. I don't have any tube mics, but I guess I will soon. So if I figure that out, I'll tell.

Nope, not the V77... I think Harvey said something like the V69 being like a V67 on steroids.

well, if that's true, I'll be getting what I originally wanted anyway, b/c I think I'm getting the 960 soon. And I did find the 179 price. Of course I also need cheap snakes, a capo, a cable or 2, some other junk and it's gonna be like $300....

***************** WOW ******************

THAT'S a mic.

Presence, smooth lows, lean in for some prox effect on my lower/softer vocal very smooth and easy to control, little high boost captures the esses and mouth and throat without sibilance, when I sang more of a nasaly midrange, it picked it up really well - as if I EQ'd it for that part - really weird but super cool, gives my cheap acoustic guitar a classic kind of a sound like I've heard on some LP's I have.

This mic is worth every penny, it blows me away.

Lot's of mics are nice to have, important to have, but this seems to be about the same price range but way higher in distinctive and quality sound.

Do you think I'm impressed?
