Bring Back Transfat!
I've got a 13gb 5400 and an 80gb 7200. I know I want to use the small drive for applications an OS.

Who's the master, who's the slave? I'm also running a CD and a CDR. What should the line up be on IDE 1&2?

Also, I've never setup 2 drives. Once I format the 1st one and load windows and Ntrack, what do I need to do with the 2nd one?
Do I just format it and name it Drive D?
Do I need to put any software on it to store recordings?
Once formatted, will it just magically show up in My Computer as Drive D, or is there some complicated process for using 2 drives?

Thanks,
wannabe geek :cool:

well, i think your C: drive is the PRIMARY master....this second drive should go as SECONDARY master......

smaller apps/os drive is C Drive on the Primary Master......

larger audio drive is D Drive as Secondary master......

ive never replaced a c: drive before so i cant help ya there......

but yes, once it is installed you run the included disk and it sets it up all pretty for you......

no, dont put any software on the second drive....if you bought it for audio purposes, just use it for the actual .wav and .sng files that you are recording and playing back.......

if you do need it for extra storage, partition it and use one partition for audio and one for storage....again, im pretty dumb on partitioning but a few here are experts.....

just remember....breathe in, breath out.....something will go wrong, but you are amongst friends......

if you feel overwhelmed, put it in the hands of an expert......

places like CompUSA usually install for free, but with a 2-3 day turnover....

wait up, is this 2 NEW drives in addition to whats in there now?......

Yes, just hook it up to the secondary IDE channel, as master if you have nothing else on that channel. If you do, make sure it is set to slave.

Do not use the included disk, if there is one. Just fdisk it and format it.

make a windows startup/boot disk.

go to start>run>command

sys a:

copy fdisk and format from c:\windows\command to the boot disk

Unplug your OS drive if your unsure of how to use fdisk.

run fdisk, the rest is self-explanatory.

It's a good idea not to name it the D drive. Many programs look to the D drive for a cd player. I'd use another drive name like G,H,M,N....

I have no problems with my audio hard drive being named D: (my CD drives are E: and F: ).

Put all your HD's on the Primary IDE Channel, All your CD Drives on the Secondary. (Not necessary, but good practice and better performace)

C: = Primary Master. (Usually... I've seen weird installs where drives start at E: with the os on E.)

You can format it and "Label" it whatever you want... (ie. My Audio, BigAssDrive, Poo)

You may also assign it a Drive letter like D, E, F, Z. (Correct me someone if im wrong, I don't beleive this is possible with Win9x/ME)

Do I need to put any software on it to store recordings?

No... It would probably be a empty drive (after its been formated) where you can put in whatever files you fancy. (Wav, Mp3, Games, Porn... :) )

Once formatted, will it just magically show up in My Computer as Drive D, or is there some complicated process for using 2 drives?

Win9x/ME - I beleive it magically shows up as whatever drive letter it feels like being. (Likely a unused drive letter). It doesnt have to be formatted to show up either.. at minimal, it has to have a partition.

Win2k/XP - Same as above, but with the option to assign a different drive letter.

If the two drives are masters, the two CD drives will be slaves. AFAIK if there are two devices on a chain the speed of the chain will be the speed of the slowest drive on it. So the drives will run at ATA 33??

Please to correct me if I am mistaken about this. This is one of the reasons why we insist on system integrators to connect the CD drives and hard drives on separate IDE channels.

Have my PC split into three drives apply named:
1-->IRQs
2-->SUCK
3-->ASS

Works well for me and is a healthy reminder.
