We are contemplating buying a friends Groove Tubes GT55 and we are testing it in our studio to see how it matches up with our M-Audio Luna.
The luna lists for under half of what the GT55 does, but they are giving it to us less than we paid for the new Luna, and it's in IMMACULATE condition.
Well, we haven't got to really test it out, but I decided (being the inquisitive person that I am) to take apart the two mics.
Aside from a capacitor or two, these mics have almost identical circuit boards and components. Is there a reason for this? Does M-Audio license from GT or vice-versa?
Would it be pointless to buy this mic? I realize they have slightly different diaphragms and their frequency response is shown as being different. But is this a weird thing or do all solid state large diaphragm condensors look strikingly similar?
I can take pictures if need be. It's uncanny. I mean, almost identical even down to the PCB color.
