Man I type slow.

Yes I did all of those things.
Every thing seemed smooth.

D:\> dir

__Volume in drive D is win 98

It doesnt say anything about 2nd ed.
???

My 98 disc doesn't say anything about Second Edition either. Quick question. Is the disc that you have an updgrade for win98 or an actual install disk for 98se. If it's an upgrade disc, you'll need to install the original Win98 prior to upgrading to Win98se.

You type DIR, it does show contents though right?

like:

add-ons
samples

blah blah

?

Evil brings up a good point, but I would expect a different error message.

Lowered CPU speed

The disk doesnt say upgrade.

No.
After it says "volume is Windows 98"
it freezes.

I took it out and looked at it on THIS computer and it has all of the folders and .exe's and stuff.

So pretty much anytime you try to do something with the CD-ROM Drive, it locks up?

To which IDE channels are your Drives Connected?

FZ, you still haven't listed your system specs.

How many drives, processor type, vintage. etc.

These bits and pieces can help.

No...I did.....they are....

-Jetway 530BF mobo w/ SiS chips

-AMD K6-2 533 chip now running at 523mHz (95mHz x 5.5)

-Maxtor 2.5G 5400rpm single partition hard drive attempting to put OS (win 98SE) on this. On IDE controller 1 (set as MASTER)

-NEC CDR-273 CD rom also on IDE 1 (set as Master)

-stadard 3.5 floppy (no idea what brand)

-Maxtor 40G 7200rpm hard drive for audio storage but currently not plugged in at all to IDE 2

_will have in a couple of days, hopefully, a CDR drive to slave on IDE 2.

I hope this information helps.
Thanks again guys.

If you have two devices connected to one IDE channel, you may only have one of the as Master, the other must be Slave. Or you could set them both as cable select.

Put the Maxtor as Master, black connector at the end of the cable between the two closest connectors and set the pin on the back to Master. Set the CD-ROM To slave, the Gray connector in between the two on the cable and set it's pin on the back to Slave.

That might help just a bit.

I think I found it....

The CD Rom was set to CABLE SELECT!!!!!

Not to Master.

After I wrote down that I had it set as Master I was gonna switch it to slave and then I realized I read the Jumper pins backwards......

DUH!!!!!!!!!!

My voice sounds just like Eliots did when ET made the phone-home rcord-player/sub-space transpondicoder thing.
