OK I did as you guys suggested Emeric and Slack......

it was something with the CD rom so I put in another CD rom and .......VIOLA.....

.....now I get all the way to

_____"Verifying DMI Pool Data.........

Non-system disk replace and strike any key"

Now....this is a brand spankin new system so there is NOTHING on the board. No OS of any kind.
I have windows 98se and I downloaded a Windows 98 boot disk which has FDISK and a bunch of other essential ingredients.

I got it from the RADIFIED website.

....but I dont know how to access the FDISK.exe.

I put the boot disk in the drive an Strike Any Key and get

"Non-System Disk or disk error" and also get the same when I put the boot disk in before turning on the power.

I read that my next step must be to format my OS disk using the FDISK program but I cant seem to find a step by step that includes the step I'm at

...So once again I call upon the wise to enlighten me.

-mike

is getting through all this gonna make me even more of a geek than I already am.
I already get made fun of because I buy more microphones instead of effects pedals or a new guitar.:)

You actually need to make that disk bootable....or boot from your CDROM drive. You should be able to boot from CD if the OS you're trying to install is Win98SE or better.

To make a boot disk from a 9x machine, format the disk with the /s option (or check the "copy system files" option in the GUI version of format). Then copy the files from the boot disk distribution you got. Simply copying files won't setup a boot sector.

Slackmaster 2000

...and make sure you have a good condition disk. Most of the times, bad disk generate this error warning. Set the boot disk in your BIOS configuration.

A --> if you boot from Floppy disk,
C --> if you boot from HD, or
CDROM--> if you boot from CDROM.

Once again, make sure your floppy disk is totaly out of bad sector/bad cluster...

Wow, you guys rock the hardest

I am a little unclear of exactly what you mean though Slack.

Can i just put in the CD even though my drives are completely unformatted?????

If I can that I just re-arrange the sequence in the BIOS and the do I have to put the CD in and then turn the power off and then back on????????

If not, could you clarify about making the disk bootable.
I understand about making it bootable but not about the s / option.

Thank alot guys.

-mike

What OS will you use ? Where exactly do you want to install the boot ? If you can have DOS command prompt ( A> ) then everything would be easier...

System files CANNOT be installed by just copying the files to the drive.
Prefer
A>sys C: to make drive C bootable.
If you can't have the prompt, then
you will need to install OS that can be installed straight from CD (eg. WinXP) it can make the partition and format the disk onthe way. Just put the installation disk on CDROM, set the boot sequence from CDROM, go...

hand-me-down 98SE

I have 98SE that I got from a friend who got a new Dell bundled with XP so he gave me his 98se CD.
He could not find the floppy though.

I realize that this probably isnt the most kosher way to do it but its not a crack and the computer I am trying to set up is not going to be hooked up to anything except my VS880EX and a midi keyboard....I dont even have a modem in the box.

I guess you are telling me that 98SE cannot be booted from the CD directly???

Isnt there a way I can FDISK my primary drive without and regardless of the OS????

I guess I realize I have to make my FDISK boot disk bootable from THIS computer but I'm not to computer savy beyond point, click, and ACID and SOUND FORGE shorcut keys.

I have a MAXBLASTER formatting and partion tool floppy that came with my 40G maxtor drive.
My boot drive is an old 2.5G MAXTOR.
Can I use the MAXBLAST on it?????????

-mike

Follow the first couple steps here, and you should be rockin.

Forget the efdisk part, forget the dual boot. FDISK same deal, you will figure it out, just do it.

http://www.sigmacomputers.on.ca/dualboot

Do not use maxblast unless your on a Pentium 60MHz, and/or if the BIOSs is that old it doesn't recognize larger drives, like from this decade.

ITS WORKING>>>>>>>

Emeric my friend, you most definitely woop the horses ass and dont let any one tell you any different.

Thank you and thank you again.

I am formatting the primary drive (with audio drive unplugged for now) and it is almost complete.

The step by step is exactly what I needed.

I am getting really psyched..:) :D

OK Next glitch......

I got the C drive formatted....its all 1 big partion as I skipped the efdisk like you suggested Emeric.

Did the CD rom setup.
Have a D: drive

Put in Windows disk.

D:\> setup

and I get:
CDR101: Not ready reading drive D
Abort, Retry, Fail?

HHHHMMMMMMMMMMM.

Above when I did the cdsetup thing it said

C:\>C:\SAMSUNG\MSCDEX /D:SSCD000
MSCDEX Version 2.23
Copyright (c) Microsoft Corp. 1986-1993.
Drive D: = Driver SSCD000 unit 0

I assumed that was good???

-mike

You extracted cdsetup to your boot floppy and ran cdsetup.exe, and then rebooted right?

It's possible the driver is not compatible with your CD-ROM, it works with 99% of the drives I've used it on.

If this is the case, find the manufacturer of your CD-ROM, go to their website and download the drivers.

Emeric, my friend, I hope you're out there.

I got the drivers.

But decided to try it one more time before I asked how to properly load the drivers.

It said wait while setup initializes........

I waited for about 10 minutes and nothing happend.
No light on the CD Rom either.

so I hit eject and then CNTRL ALT DEL to reboot and got no response.

So I turned it off and then back on again.

This time (now) I typed setup, hit ENTER and now it says:

Your program caused a divide overflow error.
If the problem persists, contact your program vendor.

What the hell does that mean?????

It doesn't soung good.

help.....?????

What OS are you installing? 95, 98 etc?

What is the rest of your computer configuration, processor, AMD, Pentium etc.

Also, if you boot without the floppy and do a DIR on C:, what do you see?

Sorry I responded bofre i read your whole question.

Its an AMD K6-2 533 running at 550 becaus there is no 5.3X ratio setting and 112mHz buss is highest choice(ie no 133)
So its 100 x 5.5.

256 mb ram on a Jetway 530BF board w/ SiS chips, L2 cashe and all that.

Maxtor 2.5G 5400rpm hard drive for the OS in a single partition.
NEC CDR-273 CD Rom drive.
3.5 floppy, of couse.
and a 40G 7200rpm hard drive for audio, which is not hooked up yet as you suggested in your Dual Boot post.

-mike

List the computer specs. This is an odd one.

Lets verify a few things:

1. You fdisked the drive and made that partition active.
2. Your formated it using format c: /s
3. You installed the CD-ROM drivers
4. You can boot without the floppy and do a DIR on the C drive as well as the D: drive (CD-ROM is D: I'm assuming, list system specs)

What do you see when you do a DIR on C:
What do you see when you do a DIR on D:

First of all, set the FSB speed to 97 and use the 5.5 multiplier. Also make sure that your CPU core voltage is set to 2.2V.

I'll check back once you've listed what Emeric asked for.

Damn.....sorry

Dir on C:

Volume in drive C is PRIMARYBOOT (my label for it)
Volume serial number is 0c5b-13e3
Directory of c:\

COMMAND COM 93,890 04-23-99 10:22p
SAMSUNG <DIR> 07-29-02 12:22p
CONFIG SYS 48 07-29-02 12:23p
AUTOEXEC BAT 32 07-29-02 12:23p
_________3 file(s) 93,970 bytes
_________1 dir(s) 2,554,372,096 bytes free

Try that, it's safer to underclock than overclock when setting everything up.
