OK, next dumb question: does an MR-8 have 48v phantom power?

I guess I need this if I am to be able to plug my vocal mic directly in. If not, anyone recommend a good mic preamp?

Studio Projects VTB1 (1-channel, $129.); M-Audio DMP3 (2-channel, $199.).

Both are excellent. Both have Phantom and will give more than enough boost, such that you can turn the gains on your MR8 all the way down and just use the external gain...

True, sadly, it does not have phantom. One thing I am glad I did when I got the preamp is I got one with some presets, EQ as far as I know. I'm glad I did since the darn MR8 has no EQ! I got the Art V3, it has a dial with some 'programs' they call it, but it's just some EQ, but it really helps. Only a single channel but there's a dual channel rack mount also. I saw them under a piano at sam ash going cheap, I might go back to look again, but my single was about $120 ? or so, i don't remember. If you have a decent eq channel to run thru, then get whatever u want, but it's more stuff to put in the path and more cables and power cords and all...

oh yea, it's the little blue thing next to my chin :)

phantom power?

OK, I'm going to show my limited amount of knowledge now, but
here goes...I've only done one full recording so far with the MR-8, but I just plugged the mic (SM58) directly in and it recorded fine.
Can someone expand upon this concept for me?

I am bummed that ther's no EQ whatsoever on the MR-8 and know a preamp would help that situation. I have noticed that examples of other peoples' work is significantly louder than mine. Are you guys cranking up the volume on your PC or is that a result of using a preamp too?

At this point I'm just mixing direct from the MR-8 onto a stand-alone CD Burner (same as I did with my 4-track cassette deck) because I have not got the PC software deal worked out yet.

Obviously a lot to learn...

Thanks!

JEEZ! whaddaya want for $300?
Kester, your mic don't need phantom power so no need to worry. It's nice having a mixer for all that stuff though. I just have a cheapo Behringer UB-1002 I paid less than $100 for... it has phantom power, 3 band eq, and silent pre-amps. All this stuff if relative though, you sometimes get what you pay for and sometimes you get ripped off. I'm happy with what I ended up with.

I'm thrilled...

I've been in love with the whole concept of multi-track recording ever since I was a kid. It actually seems like a miracle to me that any of this is possible (from the comfort of our own homes). No complaints here...

It really is amazing. Also amazing is you can pop an mp3 up for free on the web, link to it here and people hear it 5 minutes later and can comment on it an you can see how many hits you got on it.

I use the MR8 every single day, it gets a workout and with no moving parts, I don't even worry about it. No head cleaning, de magnitizing, swabs, rubber conditioner, cleaning solvent, bits of tape and noise.... and cheap.

but you have a good mic. that one and it's brother will be around forever and as long as i can remember too. crank up the input pot, then mix internally and crank those levels up too, then crank em up on external mixdown. you'll have enough level. if you get noise, then don't crank it up as much, if it's clean and low noise, who cares, then use the volume on the final amp, but that may be noisy too, so it's a trade off. you'll just have to live with close mic'ing for a while. btw, i also use my v3 with my sure sm57 and 8. maybe you can find a v3 used on ebay or something, they gotta be floatin around somewhere...

I'm using a Behringer UB802 mixer ($50 new) that has nice 3 band eq's, and an ancient Digitech effects unit in its effects loop, and so far everything is quiet with decent levels into the MR8. The UB802 is Behringers least expensive mixer with phantom power from what I can tell, and if I ever get a condenser mic I can just turn the feature on. So far I'm loving this quiet, budget rig.
