Ok, Need help. With Acoustics ( Pics Inside )

Ok thats my mastering room...

And this gives you what idea?... that I have everything done but foam. and I dont know what to do. to be honest... I have no idea what to do. you get a good idea from that picture how the rooms are very square and very Bare. the live room is much the same, I am going to build some bass traps out of backer board, but I know i am going to need some foam for acoustics. I ust dont know where to start, when I clap in the Live Room i get some reverb, not much like Iwill say 1-2 seconds after I clap. Im pretty sure I want to cut that down, but I am also trying o be cautious because I will be recording, Drums Guitars Bass and Vocals in the same room, so I need an avrage setup thats flexable. also I was told i need some foam in my mastering room along with some bass traps. ( if you dont know what bass traps are I will be happy to tell you, they help a ton and its a trick I learned From Dave Fortman, Producer of Evanescence. ) The Live room is 16ft x 16ft, the master room is 12ftx16ft. 8ft ceilings. Carpet. and 5/8ths Sheetrock ( really thick )... Thats all I can say other than...... Help.
 
First of all, welcome to the forum. There is a ton of information here and a lot of good advice to be had. I would also recommend checking out the forum and other links at www.johnlsayers.com.

As far as your "mastering" room goes, we typically refer to that as a control room, so if you get some different answers about the type of room, just beware.

A few questions I have that everyone will want to know answers to before responding with any advice.

1. You say your room is 12x16. Is your mixer on the long or short wall? Ideally it would be on the short wall with the monitor speakers firing down the long wall.

2. Foam is generally frowned on around here. Its acoustical properties are only good for upper mid and high frequencies and leave the lower mids and bass frequencies alone, which can create a muddy mess. You will get a lot of references to Owens Corning 703, which is rigid fiberglass with varying thicknesses and which has good acoustical absorption. Bass traps can be constructed from OC 703, also, and typically should be located in the corners where bass tends to build up. Bass traps can be as simple as placing some 703 across the corners to as elaborate as you can imagine.

3. Have you ever seen the acoustics primer over at the SAE site? If not, spend some time reading through this link: http://www.saecollege.de/reference_material/index.html

This should give you some ideas on how to start planning your treatment. The guys here can give you some more specific details on how to locate your treatment, etc.

Thank you for your reply the sae webpage is so full of info its not even funny, thank you for sharing. I have endless questions about endless subjects, I just like to try to stick to one at a time. :)

Ahh yes the whole checkbox thing. well im new here, and the way i saw that was him bashing some guy that was misinformed, and thats not cool. I will admit it was low of me to quote it and do what I did, but at the same time, that guy could have been me.

Either way, thank you for your help, I have been spending the most part of this morning reading over the resources brought forth.

Mr. Winer... it is Rod Gervais who deserves the scolding for rudeness, not OmniMind. If you read that entire thread you would know that.

And thank you for answering my email on the subject. When I hear experts agree, I can only surmise that my ears are fooling me.
 
I read the entire thread, and I didn't see any reason for Rod to apologize. There were a couple of sarcastic comments, yes, but any grown up would realize they were just sarcastic comments. You'res weren't any better (or any worse) for that matter.

You two just disagreed. So be it, what's the big deal? You thought foam was useful in that context, Rod believes it's not. Why poison every other thread with this sillyness?

Buy foam, be happy.

Agreed. I wasn't out to make a big deal of it, and never was looking for an apology - I've got thicker skin than that. But when I saw the "scolding", I thought it was kind of ????
 
What i mean't to say when I started this thread was " What do you think about what I said in the other forum who do you think was right, I need no help whats so ever" I thank the few for the links and the insite.
