So it's been a while since I've posted any new music but here's a remix of a song of my father's I recorded last September. It's his composition and playing so comments are welcome but useless to me.

What I AM interested in if anyone has the time, would be a comparison between the remix and the original.

Hopefully a few of you haven't heard the first version and this recording is new music to you.

Pickin' in D remix

Thanks for your collective patience with me...I'm working on some new tunes (somebody bust my balls):D

Now that's what I call some pickin'! Guitar sounds are real nice and up close like I'm in the room. This is your dad? Dude! He Rocks! This just sounds great!(IMHO)

Twist

This is sweet man.I believe I caught the first version of this when you first blew on the scene here.:D This is an excellent composition.Very melodic.I dig it for sure. The recording and mix is good too.I dont have any complaints.....some people might want just a tad of verb added to the guitars to make it larger, but it sounds fine to me.It sounds nice and intimate and in my face as if I were sitting in the same room he was playing in.

Your dad is a good guitar player.

Hey thanks guys!

Yeah Kramer, I had a boatload of plugins on the original version but I liked the way it sounded without any plugs.

This has just got to be the worst, most horrid tasting mix of
ingredients ever known to man!!Rough and Uneven, with the sauces dueling it out with each for command of the creation!!!
I mean,damnnnn, what idio..............Huh?.............what did you say!!??................OHHHHHHH!!!..............................................

.........my bad! I thought this was HOMECOOKING.COM!!! :D :p :D

Jake-the Snake, robust and exceptional perfomance! Every note and chord was captured brilliantly. Soooo clear and ambient and I had to listen anutha 4 more times! I even enjoyed hearing your finger's slide up and down the neck so effortlesly! Luv'd the chordal change and progression of this jammie!
I may be wrong, but I think there was a wee-bit of a hiss problem on certain parts where you played in the upper register that maybe caused by too hi a thresh on gates, but that could have been my hed-fones!
Regardless, this was a fine, soothing production worthy of radio
play!!!

I enjoyed it! I burned it to c/d! Nuff said!

That was really clean and pristine sounding. I like it a lot. Ohh, new tune for me. :)

Would go good with frosty mug of coconut rum & creme too!!

WoW! Very good. I enjoyed listening to it. The sound it very good IMHO. The is no where to hide in this mix. I would never stand up to the test if I where the guitar player, Thats why I need drums vocals & bass:D. I guess thats the best thing I can say. The player on this better have his chops up or else. (which he does).

What kind of guitar and miking if you don't mind

First time listener

Misterqcue, I know what you are talking about, the hissing is his breath. No gates or compressors on this mix....Just the "mastering".

The guitar is a Gurian...old steel string and I captured it through an AKG c300 (I can hear the chuckles) to Event MP1 to Echo Mia. There is a bit of reverb on the rythym guitar track (MPX1) and the lead giutar is the same Gurian through a beta '57 to EMP1 ..blah, blah.

My dad is the real deal.

:)

LOL...no shit. I've got the same mic (dumping it on Waldo soon,...er, I mean..DONATING :D). But the thing about acoustics that I didn't believe when I got here (and do now) is that the mic's not NEARLY as important as the position. Have you ever listened to any of CAT-EGG's stuff? All his acoustics are mic'd with an SM58, and they just sound great.

OH YEAH, BACK TO THIS KICK ASS PIECE THAT I'M GONNA' LOOP FOR THE NEXT 4 HOURS!! Pass along kudos for me. Now, don't get pissed at me here, but the rhythm sounds at least partially DI'd to me. Is it the verb that's giving it that tone, or does the guitar sound like that? BTW - that's not a slam; the tone is super easy on the ears, it's just so freaking smooth that I think my head is not wanting to believe that it was mic'd on air.

G is my favorite key to pick in...D is second. Could you have him do one in G right quick so I could just loop it and play along for the next several years...:D :D

Nice Mix
Chris

LOL...ummm..hehehehe. Well, I'll say this. THE OLD MIX WAS JUST FINE!!!

(downloading the right one now)

Ahhh... That explains so much. Fucking fantastic, man. I like 'em both. I like the remix better, and I didn't think that was possible.

Less is more, eh?

Nice mix (again, lol)

sounds good, nice piece..

the mix sounds too loud for such a mellow song.. I find myself saying that a lot lately, but people are getting crazy with the limiters or whatever..

Sounds fantastic, but I'd carefully roll off some of the lows a bit as it's a little boomy to me. Just a touch. Maybe start by trying something like 0dB at 80Hz down to about -20dB at 16Hz, and go from there. Generally it sounds great, and the boominess seems to be mostly in the first 20-30 seconds.

Give your dad a big Sluice thumbs up on the music. This sounds terrific.

Thanks Sluice, my speakers are a bit bass shy (Alesis M1)so I don't get the big picture as far as that is concerned.

Chriss, the original had a direct output track blended in but the remix is mostly the mic output. the direct is still there (for a bit of body) but it's down -20 dB in the mix, nearly inaudible soloed.

B. Sabbath, you might be right, I may have overdone the Ultramaximizer on the "mastering" stage, I'm really just going for a modern sounding master.

Anyone else find the mix too "loud"?

Now that you mention it, yeah. I'm not sure it's too loud on the meters, necessarily...I mean, as long as it's not clipping, it's not too loud, but something about limiting and maximizing does something a little unpleasant to it. It might have added a little noise in terms of little clicks that weren't there too. I didn't mention it, b/c I probably wouldn't have noticed it at all if I hadn't heard the "original" version first. They're both still back to back in my winamp, btw. This is seriously cool.

And here's another vote for a low cut. I was listening on headphones last night. It gets better for some reason, so maybe some surgical work at the beginning would do it.

Okay, I see Sluice already said that.

Here's something new from me: I HAVE NOTHING TO CONTRIBUTE ANYMORE...I'M ALL USED UP. GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD.

WHOA....this is your dad..?.....man my dad was soooooo lame he couldnt play anything .........loser....
i dont think its to loud...but you have heard my mixes so take that for what you will..
jesus christ .....he is good ..the recording is great too...how many fingers does your dad have???....OBVIOUSLY this is more than 10....

very cool..i bet your dad is actually cool to hang out with..
jamal

nice

i like it. missed this the first time around....but that was before i had broadband, now i don't have anymore excuses for not checking out everything by everyone.

damn, i wish i could play guitar.

this is great. i agree with sabbath though, sounds just a tad 'maximized' a bit crispy as well. i'm not dumping my C3000B just yet. for one, it's my only mic, and for two, i found a great use for it....background vocals.

you know, it must be really cool for all you guys who's dad's are musicians. mine doesn't have much interest in music, but he was always very supportive, and still is.

My Dad mostly drank a lot and beat me with closed fists.

Good times, good times.
