TelePaul

J to the R O C
Might have to revisit the vocals on this one - maybe with a little help from a friend - but your opinions are welcome. It's a collab with my bro; he sings the first and last verse, I sing the (very soft) chorus.

I played all the instruments (except the drums, they're a loop) and I changed my approach to recording. I used a bunch of amps instead of a modeller and for the bass I micd a practice amp with a condensor. I wanted to keep things pretty old school in honour of Neil & Co. It's very rough all round!

Starts out pretty true to the original.....nice sounds. Voice is pretty smooth...not like Neil, but still a good rendition. Nice playing..it's sounding pretty good. If it was me, I'd try and be a little more agressive in the vocal delivery. Not over the top screaming, but try and project a bit more into it. It could use a bit more roughness in that area.

Not bad at all though...fun listen.

Do you think the chorus is poor vocal wise?

Correct me if I'm wrong but is one guitar dirty and one clean in the intro? I liked everything, vocals weren't so bad. The lead guitar kinda bothers me though, sounds too bottled and muddy IMO. But I'm starting to think that that was the point. What mics did you use?

oh and I'm working on a cool Symphonic Metal type tune. Dedicated to True :)

You were right about the intro...and that verse pattern throughout, it's double tracked. The dirty is through a Marshall TSL601 and the clean is an epi valve junior. I played my Tele for everything and I could have done with a humbucker to clean up the lead. Having said that, the original was recorded back in the 60s and it has got a rough sound to it also. Used a cheap sennheiser dynamic for micing amps and a studio projects TB1 for vocals and bass.

Yay!!!! A CSNY Tune - haven't heard them for a while. You have good taste in covers...:) Good job on the doubling parts. I thought the second verse and chorus' could use a harmony (falsetto), just to fill them up a bit... The music is perfect - nailed that for sure.... I would take the reverb/echo down just a tad on the vocals in some spots - might be the foldback is a bit high though.... Just a minor nit really.... Took me down a good path on memory lane.....thanks Telepaul....:):D:):D

My next request is for Teach Your Children.... or maybe Woodstock...

Edit - okay you can loosen your jock strap now - I just realized how high the range of the vocals is..... :D

Yeah the chorus is pretty high alright! I can't do anything close to it. I don't even know if my chorus is in key. I'll need someone who can give it lots of power at that range.

What exactly do you mean by foldback? I'll mess with it some more over the weekend.

I hope I have the right terminology, but foldback (to me) is the repeats or tails that occur after the original words are done. If they last too long they seem to make the reverb sound too heavy.....I like it when you can barely hear them in passing but they're easy to hear if you listen for them.....

Not so much poor, just could use some enthusiasm....let er rip a little. It sounds like the chorus is too controlled...try putting a bit more emotion into it. Don't worry about sounding like Neil...do it your way.

I saw this and I thought "This is either gonna be right on, or absolute shit". Good thing it's more of the former :p. Vocals are fine, not Young, but no one is going to nail his voice. There might be a bit too much reverb on the vocals. It sounds like it was recorded in not the most ideal of places, but that often can't be helped. Good job, though, I've always loved this song!

TelePaul,

I rather like your version of this. It's a bit different (like me :D;))

The tempo is a tad slow and it needs more guts and a bottom end.

Feel free to email me a wave file and I'll take a crack at adding bass and additional vocal harmony.

Seriously. Email me a file.

BTW, Birds is on my agenda this weekend.

Hey Telepaul...that would be at .com :D..sorry I didn't add that. You are probably thinking...okay, .net .com .org .idiot :D

Very good guitar work and vocal style. Tough song to sing, man. Maybe try hitting the vox with a bit of autotune. It's not way off in pitch, just kind of wavering, so you might get by with autotune without too much in the way of artifacts.

I really like the panning on the guitars. . .

And good timing on bringing the accoustic guitar in.

I like how you changed the chorus. . . good way to put your own spin on it.

I like the tones.

Is it a drum machine?

I loved how you made it slower.

Vox aren't the best performance. . . but they fit into the song well.

GREAT job in my eyes

I don't really know the original version so I can't comment on how "true" it is. Sounds pretty good overall. Guitars sound good. I think the lead might be a little too "wet" with the reverb just for my ears. Vocals too. The lead and vocals could be dried up some to me, but maybe that's how the original is. Overall though the mix seems pretty good. Everything sits well and nothing seems out of place. Good job! :)

Thanks all!

True: No worries, I'll send it along later today.

Randy there's a bass in theres somewhere it might just have to come up a bit in the mix - Bass in not my fortay. But if you wanna do vox, that's cool! I'll pass it over later. Also it IS a bit slow, I noticed that, but I have a pretty finite number of drum loop sets so I kinda have to compromise - I think Birds came out a little slow also.

Greg: Yeah, the lead is something that caused me some grief. Because I've panned the rhythm guitars hard left and right, the lead sounded a bit strange coming up the middle. I messed around with levels and decided on that amount of reverb to have it sit right in the centre but I could ease up on it. I'll rethink the verb on the whole tune.

Ziplock: I used Drums On Demands drum loops, I like em quite a bit. Thanks for the feedback!

As for the vocals...well, your comments were far nicer than I was expecting! I was tempted to use Antares Autotune but because my voice is so soft in the chorus I figure it would just go all ghost-like. I'll have someone with a stronger voice have a go at it, it's a tough one to sing.

Not bad. I think some more room sound in the guitars would help them blend with the drum sound better. The vocals are ok but you picked a tough band to copy. I think a little better pitch and more sustained notes would help.
