oh uh ... newbie and new stuff

to young to go to recording school. and i have all this equipment from my uncle that i got from christmas. its all analog. I dont know how to work most of it . my dad is turning a room in my basement into a small studio. how can i learn how to set it up and use it? are there any good videos or books for starters ?

I think its pretty good .. heres a picture of his studio ... im trying to setup something like it .. but im gonna have a harrrd time figuring out how to use it. Im only in high school.

DAMN!!!

... that is a SERIOUS christmas present. i'm very jealous. i've recorded on a tsr-8 before, but never owned one. i think your best bet, in my limited time on this board, would be ghost of fm, or reel. they, along with others, are really up to speed on analog gear, and tascam in general.

DONT SELL THE TASCAM 8 TRACK

if i'm right these machines will escalate in value and be ahem "vintage" in the future.
give a bit more detail on your goals please ?
in the interim if your allowed to i would sell some of the gear
and get some nice preamps and mics. if your uncle okays it of course.
 
1. im in a band. i might do some single stuff. but i need to be able to record vocals, keys, guitars,bass and drums. im into funky kinda stuff.

recording school or summer program for teenages im not even done with high school yet and i would love to learn more how to use my stuff.

I'm new and couldnt tell you how to use that stuff but I can suggest you go to Barnes and Noble (or whatever) and pick up "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" by Peter Mclan and Larry Wichman......25 bucks and a hell of a reference. You read that and it gives you the basics of what you'll want to do from micing your instruments, vocals, to how to use the equipement you have before, during and after the tracking.
Also, at the larger bookstores, check out the magazine section. You can find a couple mags on recording...pick them up from time to time and you will see cool articles on topics you dont even know about. I've been collecting these mags for a year or so now and am only now going back to research questions I have. Once you do this, do a search on this post for each piece of gear you specifically own and you can learn about them more.
And, if you get too frustrated....let me know and you can mail it all to me. I will take good care of the stuff!

I see that's a picture from eBay. Did your unkle buy it from eBay for you? How much did he pay for that setup?

he posted it on ebay and i told him that i could use it for my band. and he gave it to me. cause he moved to paris and couldnt bring it all.

Howdy!:)

Isn't it nice to have Nice uncles?:)

If you are as green as you say, a real good starting point would be to get out the owners manuals of the reel to reel and the Tascam mixer and start reading!

The mixers manual will show you precisely how to connect it to the recorder and how and where all the signals go and what all the buttons do.

For me or any one here to type out all that is required would be a daunting task and we would for the most part just be telling you what is in the manuals anyway so, if you do have them, hit the books! If you don't, ordering them from TASCAM'S parts department out in California would and should be your first purchase to get started on.

Once you have the picture in your mind about how those two piece work together, the rest of it will quickly fall into place.

There is also a very good website called;
Mixing your own sound which is chalk full of very good tips and advice. Go there and start reading while you are waiting for the owner's manuals to arrive, if you have to order them.
