Hi guys, my name is Daniel and I'm from Brazil. First of all, I'll ask you to excuse my english, I'm doing the best I can
I'm new to the home recording experience, and decided to buy something inexpensive to get used to micing, recording and mixing stuff, and later move on to something more professional equipment, so I bought an used Tascam Porta 07 (and here in Brazil it costs the same as an 424 mkIII in the US), and obviously it came without any user's guide, owner's manual or whatever it could help me learn how to use it. Since there's a lot of very nice people in this bbs helping newbies like me, I tought I could post some of my questions here.
Ok, and now for some questions:
1- Does anyone has info on this deck? I've searched the entire web (trust me) and it seems that some alien organization wiped out anything related to the porta 07. Am I going against God in a 'The Name of the Rose' kinda conspiracy?
2- I tried to mixdown some recordings to my computer (PIII 850, 128 Mb RAM, onboard soundcard) using SoundForge 6.0, but I got a very low volume sample from the track I tried to rec to the computer. Is that happening because my cheap onboard soundcard?
Is it possible to keep using this card, or do I really need to buy another card?
3- Which one is the best software for this kind of mixing and effects? I have the SoundForge 6.0 but it only works with 2 tracks (I guess).
4- The porta 07 has 2 switches labeled 'Record Function'. One of those has another label, 'Buss L', with three possible positions: 1, safe and 3. The other switch, 'Buss R', with 2, safe and 4. What the heck is this 'Buss' thing? I know L and R stands for left and right, but I don't know what is the function of these switches.
5- There's another switch labeled 'Monitor Select', with remix, cue and eff positions. What are those options for?
6- By the way, what does this 'cue' thing ? There's 4 volume-like knobs with labels 'Tape Cue', for each one of the 4 tracks.
7- What is this 'Zero Return' button for?
8- I was testing the deck, and recorded some guitar riffs into track 1, and then recorded an solo into track 2 while listening to track 1. I worked just fine, but it also bounced track 1 into track 2. How can I avoid this from happening?
Well, that's the biggest message I've ever posted on a bbs, excuse me fom my ignorance on the subject. Here in Brazil it's hard to find information on home recording, but I won't let it stop me from doing what I want.
Thank you all for the patience reading this badly written post, and I hope I get some of the answers to the questions above.
You guys rocks!
Daniel Sousa.
