Oh no .....not another best budget mic thread

Well I've searched and I still can't find the info i need to make an informed buying decision. I'm looking for a LDC for vocals. One male and three female vocalists. The male is a tenor with a lot of gravel, the women are doing three part harmonies. The band is a power trio, fronted buy the female VOX trio. The music gets a bit heavy, I don't think I want too bright a sound, our music has a darker tone to it.

These are some I was considering, some are cheap enough I could buy two or three to fill my needs

I have and like the V67G - quite colored, some would say dark. I love it on my weak baritone/tenor voice.

It's my guess that the 992 is quite similar, but with a pad and high-pass filter. It also costs about twice as much.

As far as the SPs, the B1 is more neutral, the C1 is more colored and, many say, crispy - that is, more sizzle and sibilance. If you're looking for a darker sound, I don't think you'll like the C1. Of course, (all together now), YMMV.

Haven't heard the 990 but it's not a true large diaphram, and it has gotten very mixed reviews around here.

Have you considered a Groove Tube Md1b tube or FET? I JUST purchased the FET on a whim, and I'm not sure I'm gonna keep it, so if you're interested, let me know.

Nearly everything that you listed is either of the "bright" or "kinda bright" category (not all, but most). So I'm not sure what to say. Some of your choices are decent--the SP mics and the V67. But if dark or kinda dark is what you're after then IMO, you want a dynamic mic like the Electro Voice RE 20, Sennheiser MD421 (a personal fav.), Beyer M88 (a fantastic mic). Any of these mics will give you the low mid 'meat' that you're looking for. For the trio, you may want to look at the B3 (if they are being miced with one mic) or the T3 by SP (heard good things) or something like the Shure KSM 44 in omni or figure 8.

IMO, the best of the above mics is the Marshall MXLV67G, 797 Audio/Studio Projects C1, and the older Rode NT1 mics.

I agree that the Studio Projects mics may be a little bright for your taste. I recommend both the MK319 and the C2000B, both mics that agree with the ladies. I'd put the V67G on the boy. I'd buy one of each- every one of them will be good for something.-Richie

Don't wait fo me Les, I'm still not ready to make a buying decision. I'm gonna drive an hour into the big city on Monday and spend some time in one of their practice rooms with a mixer and a small pile of mics. Problem is their selection is quite limited.
