I will be traveling to spain to study abroad for a whole year and i need my dose of recording.

so im going to sell my Fostex VF80Ex (450 if you want it) and buy a 14" iBook with 60GB hard drive and 512mb SDRAM. (from a stand alone to computer recording is terrifying)

along with this, i will probably be getting the m-audio oxygen keyboard for all the sweet effects in garage band and also that MXL desktop recording mic.

now the question is, what kind of soundcard or device would be best to record me and guitar, along with all the garage band stuff? I will most likely be recording one track at a time. And as far as price goes, the cheaper the better.

please please please help.

thank you oracles of computer recording.

I would recommend simply getting the m-audio OZONE. It is a midi keyboard the same size as oxygen but it has a built in USB audio interface as well.

The Ozone -- http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MAudioOzone-main.html

It has a 1/4" input with a preamp AND and XLR input w/ preamp, and zero latency monitoring too.

It is on Musician's Friend for 249.00 right now.

I have not used this, but my buddy uses a 12" G4 powerbook and Ozone and he swears by it. I use m-audio's omnistudio USB on my 12" ibook, and I use the Audiophile Soundcard in my PC, and an m-audio keystation 49 for both.

Good advice. Check out m-audio's other stuff, too. Just about any USB or Firewire (which is better) interface will do the job. Just make sure that its bus powered... which I think most of the smaller ones are.

awesome thanks for the advice guys!
and that will probably sync perfectly with garageband and everything right?

oh man, it says it needs a wall wart though and ill be traveling a lot with no outlets in sight! so would the oxygen 8 be a better choice? then what kind of USB or firewire device should i get?

thank you guys.

In that case, the oxygen 8 would be a good choice, and wou would then need to pick out a USB powered audio interface like this http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FastTrackUSB-main.html

There are other USB powered interface of course. I would look at the selection at musicians friend if you want a broader range of options. You will probably not be able to beat the m-audio products in price and quality though.

i think the fast track and the oxygen would be awesome! thanks a lot guys.

now any reccomendations on mics?
haha sorry im milking you for all your knowledge.

i was looking at the mxl desktop kit, that seems to be the best bet for how portable i want to be.
