Returned from the dead
first things first: i know this isnt a PC forum but maybe someone here can help me or can point me towards a good tech forum.

my computer started acting up, started freezing when i tried to copy files or move them so i said you know what, ill just reformat and start clean. well i reformatted my HD, loaded windows xp professional SP 3 and JUST finished installing all of my programs and files. everything was working fine. well its acting up again now with the same symptoms. freezes when i try to copy, cut, paste. now mind you its not completely dead frozen, the screen freezes and the mouse wont move but if i move the mouse while the screen is frozen, eventually the mouse pointer moves where its supposed to.

PLEASE HELP ME.

I'm not sure if HE has the time to be on line or not, so I will try to answer for HIM. Did you download anything that could be causing a conflict? Did you try to create a restore point? Did you backup your important files just in case something like this happened?

i keep everything backed up on an extra hard drive...

and no i didnt make any restore points

ive been trying to find an answer on the internet...

it seems that maybe my HDD is going out?

EDIT: i missed a question you asked. no i havent downloaded anything recently

and.... now it seems to be working fine....:confused::confused::confused::confused:

EDIT (again): nvm, its screwing up again.

does it only do this whilst copy and paste ?
everything else is stable playing games , burning cd's , converting songs to mp3 etc.

how many memory strips do you have ?
i would have thought if it was the hard drive it would have played up during installing xp.
was it fine until you pluged in your external drive ?
does it do this when copying from the external drive or when copying and pasting from one destination on the internal hard drive to another destination on the internal hard drive.
have you run any virus checks ?

yes it only seems to do this while copying and pasting

i have two memory sticks: 1 stick is 1Gig and another stick is 512mb
my extra hard drive is internal and has been in the computer the whole time

it freezes when i try to copy files from my main HD to my extra hard drive. i have not investigated moving files within my main HD or moving files from my extra drive to a flash drive. i will test that soon and get back with the results very soon.

and no i have not run any virus checks. i dont have any virus software cause i dont wanna spend alot of money on it. if you have a link to some good free virus software i would gladly try it.

If the mouse is hanging, then suddenly going back to normal, my first guess would be the CPU overheating massively and causing the CPU to force itself into an idle state until the temperature comes back within the safe range.

sudden unexplained freezes and lock ups can often be RAM going bad too. It's best to test with new RAM but If you don't have extra RAM you could try taking out one stick and trying the same thing with only one stick if it freezes try the other. If it hapens irregardless of RAM configuration then either both sticks are going bad or it's not the RAM

files transfer perfectly fine from my extra hard drive to my 16gb usb stick.

i wonder why my CPU would all of the sudden start overheating though ...:confused:

alright. im letting memtest run on my computer (it looks like its gonna take a little bit). ill update later with the results.

on another note, i scoured google trying to find someone with the same problem that im having and seems that this is pretty rare. everything works fine except for when i try to copy files within my main HD and from my main HD to other drives.

so ... im guessing that this means that its def. a hardware problem and SOMETHING is gonna have to be replaced right???

Someone mentioned overheating. This is a little off your question but it might be helpful to someone in the future. My Brother In-Law bought a Dell. After a few months it started acting up and he thought the hard drive was going bad. He sent it to my Father In-law and he found Dell skimped on the cooling. They have a fan in the back with a fresh air duct running to the front. He installed a second fan, now all is well. For what it's worth.

alright, i let memtest run on my computer for about 8 to 10 hours and it got to 1100% percent with 0 errors.

i also checked the cooling in my pc. i have one fan directly on my CPU and one in the back under the power supply.

Things to check:

See if your heat sink fan is not clogged up with dust. If it is, get a vacuum cleaner out and clean it. You may have to remove the fan and physically wipe the heat sink clean.

Defragment your hard drive.

How large is your main drive? If it is more than 70% full that could be a problem in itself. The more there is on your drive, the harder it needs to work.

ok i checked the fans but neither seemed clogged but i cleaned them anyways.
i defragmented my drive which showed i was only using up 30% of its memory. the drive didnt seem too fragmented... oh well, hopefull just another step towards a fix.

after defragmentation was done i tried copying files within my main HD and it worked. i successfully copied my entire music folder from my documents to my desktop. i thought it was fixed until i then tried to copy my music folder to my extra hard drive which caused the computer to become unresponsive again.
i had to hard reboot my computer. then i tried copying my music folder to my 16gb usb memory stick and it worked, the transfer was VERY slow but it worked.

any more ideas anyone?

ok so after cleaning my fans, De-fragmenting my main hard drive, i made sure my drives were set to master/slave and i made sure all my connections were completely dust free and 100% properly connected. i also did an error check with "fix system errors" and "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" checked on both my hard drives.

now everything seems to be in good working order although im still very skeptical. hopefully things will work out :D

thanks to everyone who helped!!!!! i really appreciate it ;)

sorry, i know this is a couple days old, but...

if you don't have any anti-virus/anti-spyware software on your computer, and your computer is connected to the internet, you're ASKING for trouble. i guarentee you your computer is infected with spyware. this may not be a HUGE issue, but will effect performance.

the free programs... well... they suck. a lot. but i suppose it's better than having absolutely nothing. not much better, mind you.

you can download the free version of AVG. google it.

but i STRONGLY recommend you use some good software. check out CA. they're anti-virus plus anti-spyware software is affordable (around 35 dollars for a year's subscription), the software is pretty transparent as far as your day to day computing goes, and it protects really well.

AVG is the worst. I still would take free over one of the major Antivirus software. The more popular, the more likely they will be hacked. AVG has so many holes in it, it's not funny. Avast has served me well. I haven't had a virus infect my computer in years.

At any rate, the best way to avoid viruses is don't download cracked software. No cracks, no porn = no viruses.

I stopped using AVG about 2 years ago after using it for almost 5 years. It was just getting too bloated. I use Avira now. Some people like Avast too. I would NEVER pay for antivirus software, especially with the free stuff out there now. Norton and McAfee are fucking atrocious. Norton is the the absolute WORST av software I've ever used- my first step in working on anyones computer is to remove that shit. My boss told me he got a virus once so he went and spent $50 in this garbage. He couldnt figure out why he KEPT getting viruses. I told him to ditch Norton for one of the free a/v's that actually work, but of course, his $50 software had to be better than any free stuff . We got rid of Norton, cleaned up his system, and he's been good ever since...

If you think you actually have something, get Malwarebytes.

All of the software and removal tools I use are freely available. Anyone that tells you to go out and buy something just doesn't know any better...
