Off topic I know. However....

I just bought a "classic" receiver (I'll never give up the backlit AM/FM and the bigass weighted knob....) to go with the new TV. (also, because this particular receiver, assuming it gets here in one piece as a pre-main loop intended for EQ, but I'm going to stick a compressor on there, because I hate the huge volume shift you get when watching a movie....)

Anyway, the DVD player has analog outs but the TV set only a TOSLINK output. So, any recommendations on a decent (and decently priced) D/A converter. I think also, it outputs PCM Dolby.

huh huh - word :)

I'd guess your tv has 1/8 inch stereo headphone jack somewhere, does not it ?

I had similar "situation" when I've got that lil' 17" LCD TV in my studio-room, tv has no audio out, but only headphones.
So I just got 1/8 inch stereo to RCA L/R cable and ran from headphones out of the TV trough selector box into AUX IN of the old KLH 52 receiver (which has a string of six!!!! 6.3 volts / 150mA lamps behind AM/FM ..heh heh...) and it works just fine. Just set the the TV volume at low first and then adjust up slowly. That would work fine when watching tv , when watching DVD you can connect directly from DVD outs. You may want to get (or make your own) stereo selector box for the AUX input of your "classic" receiver , if you are going to have many sources.

anyhow,

I don't have any tips of "good/cheap" D/A box though, never cared to have one for any reason :(

No headphone. The only out (unless the /O on USB I/O counts....) is the TOSLINK.

I've seen a few things advertised here and there, anything form $30 to $90. I'm guessing for my purposes there shouldn't be that much difference (this is for the TV, not the DVD player)

:-)

google "Toslink to RCA" :)

what TV do you have exactly? no phones?!!!! hmmmm

It's a Panasonic, LED. I naturally *assumed* it had analog outs....

I've come up with a few solutions, including a box on Amazon that only costs about US$25.00. There's another Dolby box that costs 5x that much.

The thing I'm not actually sure of (and here I have to admit I'm just not up on Dolby 5.1 (I only have two ears.... and, in keeping with the bigass FM dial, I have a set of bigass hi-fi speakers.....)) the output needs to be decoded to 5.1 or not. I think I can configure the digital out, I'll have to double check.

Be careful though ...!
Yes! Be careful :D

"google "Toslink to RCA"" is not a suggestion for what to get but for what to google. :listeningmusic:

but you don't even have to do anything, as the Board already googled it for you automatically , see attached screenshot or Log Out and view the thread as a "guest", or simply see the side-bar while typing a reply .... huh huh, lol

On the subject of "analog RCA" vs "S/PDIF RCA" I'd say: "If you see double it has to be analog" :D:drunk::D

That's kinda weird like that Tom Cruise movie where they scan your eyeballs and invite you personally to buy something when you walk into the mall...I think it was Minority Report? But, that looks like the appropriate box nonetheless!
