O.K Time for some knowlege Please

After battling with cheap gear for ages, I have decided to sell my dirt bike ( I will regret this I am sure) and buy some good recording gear. So can any one help with some knowlege. My P.C system is fine, and I know what sound card I am getting and I am using cubase VST 3.7. I don't want to upgrade this because I like this version. Now

1.Is a mixer different to a preamp? Do I need both in line before the soundcard?
2.Does the mixer/preamp type to get, depend on the sound card.
3.Can I plug my guitar effects straight into the mixer/preamp.
4. Can I turn the preamp signal too high and damage card.
5. Can I plug the mic through the same circuit using line in on card
6. Anything else you can think of on this topic that I should know.

A lot of silly questions, I am sorry, but I keep damaging sound cards because I have no clue. What should I spend my bike money on. (I am trying not to cry)

A mixer usually has a preamp on every channel strip. Dedicated preamps are usually better but mixer pre's are ok to use.

No

Yes.

4. Can I turn the preamp signal too high and damage card.
Possible but not likely. You have to have the pre signal low enough so it doesn't clip.

5. Can I plug the mic through the same circuit using line in on card
You can plug the mic into the mixer and then line in to the card. You can't run the mic directly into the card.

6. Anything else you can think of on this topic that I should know.
The mixer isn't as dangerous as the dirt bike as long as you don't try wheelies with it.

Since I record one track at a time I guess I don't need a mixer, as I mix on cubase. So I am going to buy a new soundcard, mic, preamp and guitar effects rack.

One more question, can I use the same preamp for mic, guitar and bass?
