O.K. - live music (and recording) and using Cubase mixer for monitor mixes

Complicated title - perhaps even more complicated question. The main purpose to my purchase a year ago of a Firepod and Cubase SE (not quite a year ago) was to be able to record live performances for a number of bands/groups I'm either in or lead.

Bottom line, however, is that I need a way to create 4 separate monitor mixes for stage monitoring. I can, and very well may already have, buy an analog mixer that has 4-6 aux sends. However, I'd like to know if it's possible to use the Cubase mixer and features to "send" a custom mix or two to the Firepod's monitor "outs" for the purpose of driving a couple of wedges. If I can do that, I'll still be using the Firepod's preamps to capture (and send) each instrument/vocal information into the computer for recording, while at the same time using the resultant line level signal into my analog board for live mixing. The board currently can produce two monitor mixes (independent mixes) in addition to the main L/R FOH mix - I just need another couple of mixes to tailor the on-stage sound for the performers.

Just wondering if this can be done with the Firepod/Cubase SE combination.

most likely, yes. go to "sends" on each channel strip in cubase, set it to a particular output and work yer magic that way.

Yes, Cubase can do this. What you have to have though is enough inputs and outputs to be able to. However, you will end up with some latency.

So to which output do you assign the channels you want in the mix?

I would assume you would use output 1 or 2 for the two main Firepod outputs as assigned to all the channels that were coming into the Firepod for recording.

The only non-flexible part of this option is that I don't think the Cubase mixer has pre-fade software controls for the outputs. It would be nice to individually control the output volume independently of the recording input. Then it would be a true aux mix for monitors.

Cubase certainly does have prefade options. To do what is needed you need to set up a stereo output buss and 4 mono output busses (for 4 monitor mixes). Put all aux sends in prefade mode and assign send 1 to mono out 1, send 2 to mono out 2 etc... Now you have your channels with 4 independent prefade mixes. You can take this one step further by making them postfade and using channel inserts to process the channels if necessary to help refine the monitor mixes. This is of course assuming you are only using Cubase for the zoning of monitor mixes and not to make the main mix also.

Thanks - I will work on doing that with the Firepod....if I can figure it out, I could potentially configure 8 separate monitor mixes - 4 for wedges, 4 for IEM's for the combined worship band. All while recording live - it will take a while for me to get it to work, but it's good to know it's possible.
