i'm looking at getting a new nylon string guitar.anyone know of some decent brands in the $200-$300 range.(this is all new to me). i started taking a guitar class, and started to realize how hoopty mine is.

i know yamaha makes the C80, but i'm in no way endorsing it.

Sometimes you can find an old Ovation Country Artist in the $300 range.....worth every dime, and like a old Volkswagen, you can always sell it for what you paid.

I personnaly bought a LaPatrie nylon string guitar for 400$CAN, so it must be around 2 or 3$US and I like it pretty much. Now I play more on electrics, but when I get back to this guitar I always like its tone.

Its the classical guitar brand of Godin, which also makes damn fine amplified nylon string guitars (thinline) though a lot pricier ;-)

I've owned a Yamaha APX10-NA for a while, and I really like it a lot. It's more than you're wanting to spend, but I know that Yamaha makes a couple cheaper versions, an APX4 and an APX9 ( I think). You should check into those. They are just the ticket for an electric guitarist turned nylon string (like me).

The two Nylon's that I have are a old Harmony 1975 that was the last made in the USA and the other one is made by the Suzuki Violin Company from Japan. I paid $10.00USD for each pf these guitars at two differn't yard sales. You might want to look around for a used one. I like "folk" style with the tuning pegs are straght up rather then "classical" style that is horozontal. I think they sound differn't but that might be because I'm drink too much corn juice today :))
Good Luck.

Its hard to go wrong with a $200 Yamaha. They are built well and set up like a "real" classical guitar. They sound ok.
