I am helping a friend design his new studio. My question is regarding wiring his patch bays and if it will degrade the sound.

He has 3 Neutrik $80 TRS bays and wants to wire them up so he can route from the bays for ease. BUT aren't these budget bays going to degrade the sound? He is going from a Mackie 32 ch. into a pair of aark 24's in his DAW. He is using some hosa & Beldin cable too.

What do you suggest? What have you done?
Thanks for your help,
Kirk

They're not gonna do anything to the sound that the HOSA cable wouldn't do first or worse.

I think your blowing this problem way out of proportion.

Sure, a patchbay add's a bit of noise, but how much noise it adds is minimal as long as you use a good quality patchbay and good quality cables and connectors.

Neurik in my experience are the rolls royce of connectors, and i'm lead to believe that their patchbays are pretty damn good too.

There's not much in a patchbay that can introduce noise. There's no active electronics and there's no transformers.

If you'r really paranoid about noise from a patchbay (and I mean REALLY paranoid) - you could keep the patchbay in a separate rack away from any other electronics, oh, and keep them away from your speakers or computer monitors. But that really is an excessive move in my opinion.

No so much the patchbay, but the CABLE is going to be the determining factor...

Hint: HOSA is not the way to go.......

I'm not sure if they are the chinese ones. They have some # like nyys on them I think. I'll have to double check.

I wasn't sure if the hosa was a good idea too. Sounds like you all think hosa is a bad move too.

He has spools of Beldin cable sitting there that could be used.
Is Beldin good enough?

He just said soldering that many cables would really suck & that he thought connectors would'nt be cheap. I tend to think getting a really good clean signal is worth the extra effort.

Thanks for all this great help, I'll pass it on too him.

Belden is definitely good enough and connectors aren't too expensive ( about $1.50- $2.00 or so..) It would take a little while to solder a bunch of cables but it'll be worth it in the end! TOSS THE HOSA!!!! :D

I got a pile of TRS connectors from newark.com for $0.65 apiece when I built up my patchbays. I opted for the plastic backshell to save a buck apiece, but they work great.

DDev.....
