NS-10s vs Wharf 8.2A - opinions?

Does anyone have any experience with both of these monitors? I am looking to upgrade from the ones i made(Dayton monitor kit) and would love to hear some input as these two contenders are my top choices.


Also, separate quesiton, I have an Athena Auditions 8 inch powered sub...I currently use this with my Dayton monitor kit, but am wondering if some of the "pros" here think this is a bad idea(I think the sub is more aimed at home theatre use).

I will mainly be recording acoustic and electric guitars, bass, and synths. occasionally will be doing hip-hop type artists.

You came to the right place. I have both the NS-10's and the Wharfedale 8.2's (the actives) and the Wharfey's win hands down. But you shouldn't limit yourself to just those two choices. Others will chime in soon I'm sure.

i'm almost 100% set on Wharf's now...they just seem to be an incredible value.

my current set up is e-mu 1820m -> decent yammy receiver -> dayton passive monitors/athena audtions 8"sub

with the active wharfs, i would not need the amp anymore. so i would take an analog outs from the 1820m and feed them to the wharfs individually...but what about the sub? would i simply take another analog out and feed the sub(it is powered), and if so, do i want to create some high-frequency filter so that only low frequency signals are sent to the sub? not quite sure how to implement all this.

That sub is most certainly designed to be a hme theatre sub. It won't provide the tigh kind of bass that most studio subs do and isn't as efficient and smooth at lower volumes. It can still work for you though. I would recommend setting it up in a way that you can keep it off most of the time and just turn it on occasionally to rock out a bit. I would spend a good chunk of time evaluating some commercial releases on your new system with and without the sub so you can learn what your new setup sounds like:)
