Here's a remix that was done ITB. This is the first time ITB. I missed the analog mixing and my hardware, but I did enjoy the cool features offered in the computer.

Downloaded the tracks from ADAT to Sonar 7 PE.

I addressed the comments from the previous mix - raised the bass and focused on the guitars more. The keyboard is still there but it is way back in the mix just to give it some fill.

Let me know what you think.....

:D:):D:)

Gerry,
This is a fabulous song.
ITB is a scarey thing for the 1st few runs.
The bass is bassier but a lot of the toppier bits have faded - a couple or three dbs at 3Khz would give it some definition.
I can't hear the piano - could be the streamer crunching it out.
The drums sound good as does the voice.
Guitars are good - maybe one could be a little crisper.
Lovely song!!!

Sweet tone on the gtrs and vocal.

I'd bring down the lower mids of the bass gtr a little.

Thanks Ray! You're right. I'm treading into unfamiliar territory here. This was mixed on Mike's setup. The tracks were recorded on our ADATs and then downloaded via Alesis IO26 through firewire to SONAR. Pretty easy there. One thing SONAR could really use is a built in eq strip. I'll look into the bass eq...I miss the knobs on my mixer...:)

Thanks Tim.. guitars are pretty much straight off the amp via SM57. Tried a few amp sims but found them pretty bright or distorted. I think they would work better on a DI guitar but I like the sound on my amp as is. The mic is a RODE NTK pretty much flat - I've been pretty happy with it. Just a little reverb on everything in SONAR. The Pantheon reverb is similar to my PCM80.

You're right about the multitude of plugins. I'd love to find a good multi-band compressor plugin.

I've been try to figure out a way to use my PCM80 and TC Comp as I'm familiar with the knobs.

Welcome to the 21st century Gerry.:D

I'd bring down the lower mids of the bass gtr a little.

Agreed.

Overall, this sounds about the same as your usual mixes, which have always been solid. Yeah, the plugin world is where its at.;)

One thing SONAR could really use is a built in eq strip.

I am on Sonar 3.:rolleyes::p It has a 4 band eq on every track, I assume 7 has at least that. I think the vocals could come up a bit on this new version, at least the first 30 seconds.

I liked the first version of this as well as this one. Very good song. Sorry for my ignorance, but I have no clue what ITB is. I'm a dinosaur.

This song reminds me of a group called The Critters who were popular where I grew up. Their biggest hit was Younger Girl. Remember it?:)

There was some clipping on the vocals at some parts.

Drum machines/samples are are a necessary evil in home recording as most people don't have drum sets or good rooms to record drums, but there are better sounding drum samples that can be pretty convincing.

Other than that, I though it was a little muffled, but fixing that comes with time and practice.

I'm sure once I find all the plug-ins I like that I will feel more comfortable mixing. I really need to find a good Multi Band Compressor. I'm using all my friend's stuff for now, until I can afford my own interface/software. Maybe pieces for Christmas each year...

Thanks - that's a good sign....

I don't remember seeing anything on the track/console view in Sonar 7. On my Sonar 6 LE I can only see where you add an eq plug in as an effect. There's a crappy Cakewalk parametric eq but a nice Sonic Foundry 10 band graphic which I'm assuming it found in my SF software. I'm sure Mike has a good eq on his Sonar 7. The mix on this one (except bass sim) is mainly flat eq tracks straight off the recorded track.

Thanks Xeries -
ITB means "In the Box" and in this case means I downloaded all the tracks to the computer then mixed them down using a software program (Sonar) instead of a hardware mixer (My 12 Channel Alesis).

I remember that song well, it's one of those classics you never forget.

I'll have another listen and see if I can find/remove any clipping. The muffled sound can be fixed with a bit of high eq which I need to work on. Might be a while until I can remix as the DAW is at my friend's house. I can get the tracks in a bundle file but I don't have the same version/plugs yet. I'm stuck with my current drum setup (Midi thru DGX305) for now :D It's only money holding me back!

Thanks Guys! :D:):D:)

I'm on phones, so......

Sounding good here man...nice job on the vocals. Very clean, nice performance. Mix is sounding pretty good. Nice job....

Hey,

Why not stay OTB just to be different...did you find it to be advantageous, if so, why?

Anyway, I like the drums and vocals maybe a bit more on this mix, but the bass, while louder, seems a bit rumbly in places, and while I know you state you pushed the keys back a bit, I'm not sure I hear them at all now.

You know you miss those faders...c'mon...don't stray to the dark side :).

Very nice song. In addition to dropping the volume on the guitar a little, to me this song is crying out for some tremolo on the guitar part. Just a bit, nothing overwhelming. That would make it a tear jerker for sure. Good job on the vocals, wouldn't change a thing.

I agree with the bass comments. It's a little less defined than it could be. Overall though it sounds about the same but without so much keyboard.

Hey Ido, look into Reaper. It comes with a bajillion free plug-ins and many are actually usable. It's super easy to use too. You want multi-band compression and EQ? It's got it. You can add as many bands as you want. You can route as many sends and pile on as many inserts on as many tracks as your computer can handle. I've always done everything in the box, but I converted to Reaper about 6 months ago, and it was the best thing I ever did.

You can download a full working version for free, and pay for it when you decide that you love it, and you will. It's only 50 bucks.

Good stuff. I could use a little more bass.

I liked the lyrics, it's a very sweet and classic song.

Sweet, Ido.
Oh how many times I started to post a comment on this one but my job is killing me lately.

Thanks heatmiser - There is an advantage of more tracks with recording/mixing ITB. I am currently limited to 8 tracks on my ADAT setup. Familiarity toward the new interface will, over time, make it more comfortable and hopefully lend itself to better mixes.

Thanks guitar zero - Tremelo would be an interesting addition - unfortunately I don't have one on my Marshall. :o

Thanks Greg - yeah the keyboard is super low but I'm happy with it there, it could even have been totally removed as it was clashing some with the guitars. I'll look into Reaper.
Sweet, Ido.

Thanks sikter - hope the stress on your job lets up a little.

Thanks Supercreep - I'm not 100% satisfied with the bass either. I liked it better on my analog mix. It could use more definition. :D
