Question:

I purchased my first reel to reel a few months ago on ebay (Sony tc-377) and I really enjoy the sound quality...

Now that I've lurked here for a while, I am consider upgrading (however, I will likely only record my records to the reels, or concerts aired on Sirius radio.)

Since I like the quality of reel to reel, should I consider upgrading to a better player... like a Tascam or something in the $300 to $500 range?

If I do, how much will this increase my LISTENING pleasure? Or is that mainly for musicians with home studios?

Congrats on the reel-to-reel purchase. Sony made some very respectable machines, though I’m not familiar with that particular one. For listening pleasure there are probably too many options and opinions about them to list. For my listening pleasure I have an Akai GX-77. It’s not the best machine ever made, but certainly far from the worst.

A friend of mine recently got Xfm for his home and car. One of his first comments was that the oldies he wanted to listen to sounded a bit “Flat” and “Constrained.” But then he still has a nice turntable and hi-fi system with an extensive vinyl collection for reference.

Recording from satellite to tape could be an interesting experiment. Please keep us posted.

:)
