I am planning on buying a Novation K Station over a Korg MS2000 (?????). I am new to the world of synths, though, and am clueless about what sort of amplifier I will need to be able to power it. What kind of amp/monitors would I need to power the thing? I have a limited budget, but I want something of quality though. Thanks a lot.

You sure are sinking a lot of bread into your first synths (especially for a beginner on a budget).

Normally, I would recommend Roland MA-8's, but at your price range for synths, I might consider getting some high end Audix speakers.

Monitors, right? Not for playing live.

In that case I'd suggest doing a search on this board for monitors. You'll find many suggestions for low priced active or passive studio monitors and amps.

If I am sinking in a lot of money for that synth, is there a similar type synth I could get for cheaper? I'm not talking about radio shack keyboards...

I think I have a pair of MA-8, but for some reason they have to be at top volume for the sound to come out of both speakers.

Hey Abbott!

(Maybe you've heard that one before?;))

I'm in the same situation - looking for a good starter synth for not too much $$$. From my investigations I don't think you're going to find anything cheaper than either the K-station or MS2000, which doesn't sound like a toy. Personally I'm leaning towards the Korg because I think it sounds richer and more organic than the Novation. Plus I'm mainly multitracking in Acid, so the 4 note polyphony isn't a big deal to me.

One thing I'm considering is saving about $100 buy buying the MS2000R for $500 then getting a $150 controller - rather than the $750 MS2000. Probably not a good option for the Novation since there's only a $100 difference between the A-Station and K-station. Also the K-station layout seems much easier to use than the A-Station.

Just my current thoughts on the matter.

if you're building up a home studio you should search the boards for monitors, yea... note that you can power the k-station using anything, as long as it'll end out in some speakers connected to an amplifier... if you can't afford monitors atm. you can start out using your ol' regular stereo speakers and an amplifier..

There are far cheaper alternatives that are NOT toys!

If you ask me I'll tell you some.
