What type of software/processor/operating system should I equip on a laptop for home recording? I have a price range of about $1200-1500

I know a lot of people on this site are opposed to relying on a notebook as the main means of editing/recording music, but for portability's sake a PC would just be impossible. Also, the recording I'm planning on doing is not large scale. :)

I would get at least 2.8ghz processor, 1 gig of RAM, and Windows XP pro. Are you asking what laptop to get or what to get after you get your laptop? Its going to be tough getting in the door if you budget of $1,200 is needing to get a laptop, an interface, and software.

just for the laptop itself, I didn't mean to refer to the editing program.

Also, would it be wisest to custom build or buy from a brand name such as hp, dell, fujitsu, etc?

I just bought a Gateway M7515 at BestBuy for $1200 with the following specs:

AMD Athon-64 4000+ Mobile processor
1Gb RAM
100GB HD (only 4200 RPM, but it hasn't been an issue for me yet)
Dual Layer DVD/CD-RW burner
802.11g wireless
ATI X600 Mobile video with 256Mb of RAM
15.4 widescreen display (1280x800)
Firewire, USB 2.0 and PC-Card slots

I run Sonar Home Studio 4 on it with an Alesis Multimix 8 Firewire interface.

I guess it all depends on the parts included. I bought a refurbished eMachines for like $750 with a 2.8 ghz processor, 512 RAM, 80 gig hard drive...BUT, I have constant problems with it. Alot of it will depend on the quality of the parts, and what software you intend on using.

My previous laptop was an eMachines M5309. I had it for 2 years and never had a single issue.

See my post here about my laptop. I searched for about six months and settled on a Dell 9300. You will do yourself a favor to check into that. Follow the link for my specs. Mine is the second post.

What were you running on it? Multitrack software? Virtual instruments?
