Notebook soundcards

I just purchased a new laptop computer and it came with an intergrated sound card (AC97 Audio) thought I was getting something else. So my question is, can I purchase an external sound card such as Soundblaster Audigy 2 and will it work with the intergrated one? The intergrated one will not let me hear what I am recording as I am recording it.

haha word on the street here is don't buy creative sound blaster. I can't comment as i have never used it. I have a lap top with a shitty sound card as well. I got a Tascam US 122. It is an external USB sound card. It has worked well for me and is pretty cheap. I would check something like this out or something by Maudio before you go with sound blaster. These are more geared towards recording whereas sound blaster may not be.
