i am using onboard AC97 sound though. :(

PLEASE tell me that if i get an audiophile or a mia that it will sound a LOT better. cuz i get much better recording using the "mic-in" on my sound card w/a radio shack mic, than the audiobuddy and a sm58 through AudioBuddy. that's not very encouraging.

and i hear the radio as well. but i think that's my crappy soundcard's fault.

thanks for listening to a sad sad boy. *sob sob*

do not fret JOto.

Things do get better.

If you're thinking of getting an audiophile24/96, I would also recommend you audition the St Audio DSP24 Value card. It's similar with RCA ins/outs and an optional Spdif/optical bracket. The wdm drivers for it have been flawless for me and I'm getting good recordings coupled with a Presonus TubePre and a Rode NT1.

Here's a link with more info.

good luck and get a condenser for chrissakes! I think the Oktava 319 is seventy-five bucks right now at GC. I think their 219 is like fifty-nine.

If the preamp on your sound card sounds better than your Audio Buddy, my guess is that you've got a broken Audio Buddy.

Your onboard sound is not going to be the best in the world. I'd look at the Echo Mia or the M-Audio Audiophile as an upgrade until you want to go for something really good such as an RME.

Everything from the converters back will affect what signal you put down. The Audio Buddy is OK and I recommend them as a first mic preamp. But, the differences in sonic quality between an Audio Buddy and an FMR RNP are substantial in actual use. The mic will affect the sound. Dynamic mics do not work particularly well with lower cost mic preamps. So, you'll want to get a good large condenser. See Dan Richard's article on mics: www.piemusic.com/mp/micproj.html

Cable will affect the sound. The mic cable is more important than the interconnect cable. How are you connecting everything together? Do you have anything else in the chain besides the mic, Audio Buddy and cable?
