Meh...
Here's the 1st completed track for the full length I'm working on for my band Strike the Design. We tracked ourselves and I'm handling the mixing duties. I'm curious about what you guys think about the mix, if the vocals need to come down, guitars up, stay where it's at, etc.

Very good tune and performance!
The one thing that stood out to me was the guitar sound, it sounds a bit bright and thin. Don't know if that's what you were going for though.
Very nice voice and harmonies and a good drum sound.

The whole thing sounds harsh and thin to me. Not enough power and/or balance in the low end. The kick and bass are not holding it down. And I can't believe I'm gonna type this...but the drums are too out front. The bass gtr is the only thing that seems tonally right. The rhythm guitars are thin, the vocals are harsh in the upper mids and too wet-ish. The kick is too clicky, the snare is too donky, and the overheads are lost in a mash of guitar harshness. The entire mix seems compressed too hard. It's painfully loud. I've heard better from you, so I know you can fix this. Keep working with it.

The balance/levels sound ok to me.
Interestingly it sounds pretty good on my cheap speakers, but over my monitors I hear everything Greg is saying, the choices of frequency placement is... well, different... to be polite.

I'd set this mix aside,

and start a new mix, with a different selection of tonal placement, taking Gregs observations into account.

Good song and performance.

Good peformance. Like the sound overall. Liked the vocals and harmonies. Only thing I would have change was maybe a tad top end on the snare and the cymbals up a bit, but that's just my taste.

Really excellent composition and performance; love the song. Regarding the mix, however, I'm gonna have to agree with everything Greg pointed out; I won't reiterate as he pretty much nailed all of it. As a demo track, I think this would be more than good enough, because everything is audible and the track's overall sound shines through. But if you're trying to put this on your album I would take PDP's advice and try it again.

Thanks for the input guys. I hear what you're saying now. I walked away from the song for a couple days and when I came back to listen it sounded completely different - and not in a good way. I've since taken a lot of click out of the kick, but not sure what to do about the snare. I'll try and get some low-mids back into the guitars - I was initially worried about trampling on the bass guitar, but I guess I went too far.

Very unbalanced mix, to me. The only part of the mix that is semi-beefy are the vocals, because of the chorus effect put on em'. The rest of it all sounds very 2-dimensional... very thin. The kick drum is so hot, it sounds like my head is inside it throughout the whole song.

Musicianship is great, though. Great performances all around - just gotta work on the mix, and possibly the capture of it all.
