So I've decided I want to start Learning how to record drums( on 7 different tracks) I'm looking for an interface that has 7 xlr inputs and only 7 =p. I've seen the presonus firepod, but I'm looking for something a wee bit cheaper. If anyone can help me with this noob question I would appreciate it!

I don't think it gets much cheaper. One studio I work at just picked up an 8-channel firewire interface used for $225.

There's the Tascam US 1641 that sell for about $300. It's a 10 channel interface that uses USB 2.0

There's also the Line 6 toneport UX 8 that's an 8 channel interface that's USB 2.0, It's $400

They both have phantom power, XLR and TRS inserts.

Wuz gonna suggest the Tascam, course I made the mistake of checking on Amazon after I'd already ordered on and it had shipped, seller there has one sold as 'fulfilled by Amazon' for $278, no tax, free shipping, good to go.I payed the 300 plus tax.

Hmmmm i see. So i'll probably be looking to spend at least $300 ? D:

Yeah i was looking into that. Geez. this stuff is so pricy

haha yeah, the prices can be rough sometimes. But that's all the more reason to save up a good stash! So when you buy something, it'll be a quality keeper item...not something to be replaced (although granted, we all do have to start somewhere:))

And in case you're interested, I've got the 1641, and I'd definitely vouch for it. It's a good piece and gets the job done.

If you're starting to record drums, why not just go for 4 channels and mic your kik, snare and 2 overheads?

I would go for 4 channels, but i know i'm going to end up expanding pretty soon, so i figured might as well do it now

One thing I learned is to always go on Google Shopping and search for the lowest available price. Musician's Friend does a 10% of the difference between the two prices deal. Check out their site for more info.

* A tip for saving the most money:

Just say Guitar Center (which also has a 10% deal) has a higher price for the item. In this case you should buy from Guitar Center since the 10% of the difference is higher.

That is how you save the most money.

Sorry if that sounds confusing.
