Think you'd need a new soundcard to take it anyway seriously.

Guitar pickups have very low output, and it is doubtful that the mic in on your laptop would provide enough gain boost to record it successfully. Not that you couldn't do it, but it probably would not sound good.

My question is, how do you have Cubase LE but no interface? That version of cubase only comes bundled with interfaces, as far as I know.

Wouldn't a compressor pedal sort this out...ish?

The built-in soundcards of laptops (and most desktops) are made with less than $1 worth of parts for beeps, boops and light gaming.

Trying to do ANY recording on them is just going to be frustrating and a waste of your time.... see about getting ANY kind of interface.

less then a dollar is a little exaggerated but yeah they do suck.

Yea, the ones we use are made with $5 worth of parts and we buy them. :D

Maybe someone threw him oen fo their spare copies? It does come bundled with pretty much everything these days.

Oh, it's not an accusation. I just was wondering why he didn't have any hardware, when LE only comes with hardware. I figure, if you're gonna pirate recording software, you'd at least go for SX or Nuendo. :rolleyes:

Yeah I guess that clears him; I mean I have a copy of LE I don't use and even a copy of (shudder) Cubasis!

Some one here gave me a copy of Cubase LE.
:( If it is free, Cracked, poped, or code hacked thats Probably how your recordings will sound... I have 5 copys of LE from three different companys that bundle it with different things I bought... I do not even put them in my PC they are truely a joke :eek: They make good frizbees so I have about 15 good frizbees :) Look around find out what you are going to do with it then spend change

are you saying that you think the sound quality of cubase le is less than any bought recording application?

I don't understand this. LE is fine, I have a copy myself. Cracked software will yield poor quality recordings in most cases but LE is a very good little program.

Well, I used to record straight into my Macbook just fine... without interface.

I'd say you should at least try it. Go to radioshack, buy a 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch adapter (they'll claim it's for headphones), and use that into your mic input. It works wonderfully... I used to get fairly professional recordings out of that.

The non-believers haven't tried it for themselves.

The mic input usually sounds like crap. Get a 1/8" to 2 1/4" or rca adapter and use the line input.

I don't know what computer you have, but, in all the computers I've ever owned, the line in is an 1/8" plug...

So is the mic input of every sound card (talking soundblaster style) that i've seen. You're not making any sense man. :D

The mic input has a crappy mic preamp intended for computer mikes. I've used it in a pinch for recording direct guitar using a mono 1/4" to 1/8" adapter, but it's definitely not ideal. If you're going to use the sound card that came with your computer, connect a mixer or mic preamp to the LINE inputs. It will sound much better. I guarantee it. No ifs, ands, or buts. I mentioned the needed adapter in my last post.

Both inputs (mic and line) of a sound card have tip, ring, sleeve jacks.

For the mic input:

tip = signal
ring = +5v (powers the computer mic capsule)
sleeve = ground

For the line inputs:

tip = left signal
ring = right signal
sleeve = ground

Not only will the line input sound much better but you'll get 2 inputs rather than 1.

For reference:

blue = line in
green = line out
red (or pink) = mic in
